Raising the pitch on Lokpal issue, Anna Hazare today sat on a day-long fast here protesting against ’’watered-down’’ proposals of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the anti-graft measure.

Hazare began his fast at around 10:15 AM at Jantar Mantar, the protest hotspot in the capital, surrounded by a number of supporters who waved the tri-colour, sporadically shouting slogans like ’Vande Mataram’ and ’Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

"My fast has begun. I will not speak much now," he told his supporters as he also chanted ’Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ’Vande Mataram’.

Clad in his trade-mark white kurta and Gandhi cap, Hazare was received at the protest venue with a thunderous applause and sloganeering by his supporters who had gathered at the venue braving the morning chill.

Along with Hazare, prominent members of Team Anna like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Kumar Vishwas also joined the fast.

Before heading to Jantar Mantar, Hazare went to Rajghat and spend around 30 minutes meditating there. "I am fine and healthy," he told reporters.

This is Hazare’s third protest on the issue and second at Jantar Mantar. The first one, which was a five-day fast from April 5 at Jantar Mantar, had drawn huge crowds. The government had then set up a joint committee comprising official representatives and activists to draft the Lokpal Bill.

The 74-year-old activist, who had gone on his second fast that lasted 13 days at Ramlila Maidan in August on the same issue, has been demanding bringing lower bureaucracy within the ambit of the Lokpal besides provisions for Citizen’s Charter and setting up of Lokayuktas under a central law. The government as well as Standing Committee have rejected it.

Hazare has also threatened to go on an indefinite fast from December 27 at Ramlila Maidan if a strong Lokpal bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Hazare has raised his decibel on the issue, accusing Rahul Gandhi for being behind the "watered-down" proposals of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Lokpal bill.

He had alleged yesterday that the government has "cheated" the entire country and that he will campaign against the UPA in five poll-bound states and continue it till the next Lok Sabha elections.

Hazare has also warned the government that if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, he will sit on an indefinite fast from December 27 at Ramlila Maidan.

While he has accused the Standing Committee on Lokpal of "fooling" people on the issue, his supporters have questioned its credibility claiming that only 12 of the 30 MPs supported its proposals which will not help in fighting graft.

Addressing the supporters ahead of the commencement of today’s fast, activist Kiran Bedi said that people who had gathered there would pray that the government gets "good sense" to make "amends" on the Lokpal issue.

"The Lokpal does not have investigative powers. The government has given nothing substantial for Lokpal and at the same time taken away the powers of CBI. We did not ask for this," she said.

At Jantar Mantar, activists sang, beat drums, waved flags and shouted slogans as people in large numbers joined the gathering.

The political and cultural seat of many empires over the centuries, Delhi will add another chapter to its glorious history on Monday, marking 100 years of its re-emergence as India’s capital.

Majestic: King George V, exiting the Fort’s Delhi Gate, enroute to Delhi Darbar, 1911, with Queen Mary (courtesy: The Anglophile)It was on December 12, 1911, that then Emperor of India George V proclaimed Delhi as the capital of the British Raj, shifting from Kolkata, thereby returning to the city its lost glory.

The centenary of the establishment of New Delhi will be marked by year-long celebrations, being planned by the Delhi government and other cultural agencies like the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Special souvenirs will be released, and specially planned exhibitions showcased in the city.
A book on the history of seven cities of Delhi and detailing the account of how the present city was constructed, will be released by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Besides, a photo exhibition on the city of monuments will be among a series of events that the government agencies have lined up to mark the centenary year.

Though there will be no official ceremony to mark the occasion, Dikshit will release the book in the evening.

’Dastann-e-Dilli’ -- an exhibition on the city, will be also inaugurated by her and Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday.

The exhibition will chronicle the culture of Delhi -- right from its ancient days to the modern period -- where both the heritage sites and modern-day buildings co-exist.

The year-long celebrations will actually kick off in January when the Ministry of Culture has lined up a number of events that will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the city.

Delhiites have already began celebrating the centenary year of their beloved city, thronging in large numbers to a food festival at Baba Kharag Singh Marg.

The ’Delhi Ke Pakwan Festival’ brings the very soul of Delhi’s culture, street food to the people with a variety of kebabs, kulfi and other mouth-watering delicacies.

The foundation stone for the building of a new city in Delhi was laid by King George V and Queen Mary at the site of the Delhi Durbar at Kingsway Camp on December 15, 1911 and New Delhi, as it is called, came out of the architectural brilliance of Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker.

Delhi has traditionally been the seat of a series of empires and regimes that have ruled India since over 3,000 years back.

Each of the empire has left behind an indelible imprint on the heritage of Delhi, that has housed no less than eight cities over the centuries, and the 100 years of the latest city marks an opportunity to celebrate the continuity of this rich habitation.
