Investigators probing the activities of busted terror module in Karnataka have found that the handlers of the arrested ’terrorists’ were based in Saudi Arabia and most of them were Indians, government sources said today.

This is the third case where anti-India elements were found to be operating from the Gulf country. Deported LeT terrorist Abu Jundal and Indian Mujahideen activist Fasih Mahmood, who is still in the custody of Saudi authorities, were running their terror modules from there.

"We have found that handlers of those arrested in Karnataka are based in Saudi Arabia. Most of these handlers are Indians and they are in regular touch with ISI operatives," the sources said.

Karnataka police has so far arrested 14 persons after busting a terror module and preliminary investigations showed that the suspects had plans to target Sangh Parivar leaders, MPs, a media owner and two journalists.

Those arrested were given the task of gathering information about various terror targets besides expanding their module with inclusion of new recruits.

Sources said it was a worrying sign that young and educated people have been radicalised and lured into terror activities.

"We believe that more people are involved in the module and some more arrests will follow soon," the sources said.

It’s the local variation of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Or politicians enjoying themselves while people suffer.

At a time when Karnataka has been hit by its worst drought in 40 years, affecting the livelihoods of tens of thousands of people across its rural hinterland, several legislators from the three main parties, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), are on a "study tour" to South America.

The two-week all expenses paid tour of 12 legislators and three officials that will cost around Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million) was organised to ostensibly study civic facilities in countries such as Argentina, Peru and Chile. However, it is learnt, no appointments have been fixed, leaving the travellers free to "study" the exotic sights of South America.

The three political parties are "united" in condemning their legislators, who flew out of Bangalore last Thursday, some with their families, for ignoring their pleas to abandon the tour but maintained a "studied silence" on the disciplinary action they plan.

The Congress and the JD-S have an advantage over the ruling BJP in the blame game. They are questioning how Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and assembly speaker K.G. Bopaiah allowed the tour.

Shettar, the third BJP leader to head the party’s government in four years, first declined to comment on the legislators, ignoring appeals to postpone the tour by two or three months.

Later, he expressed his helplessness, saying he and the speaker had advised the legislators against the tour. People in the state, however, have begun to term the blame game as "match-fixing’ since all three political parties, facing elections in the next few months, have kept their legislators happy while making a public display of outrage and pointing fingers at each other.

"This is a typical case of having your cake and eating it too," said M. Sadashivaiah, a retired school teacher. "All parties are fooling the people by blaming each other since they think when elections are held, some other issue will be the hot topic," Sadashivaiah told IANS.

"I see this as match-fixing," added R. Sudhindra, a software engineer. "How can any of these parties claim they could not stop their legislators from going on this tour? No one will buy this plea," he said.

Each legislator has been given around Rs.700,000 for the tour. Expenses of the family members on the tour will have to be borne by the legislators. Some legislators made matters worse by their response to questions on how they could go on tour when the state was reeling under drought. Congress legislator B.C. Patil told reporters at the Bangalore airport ahead of departure that "the world would not end if they go on the tour".

In fresh trouble for former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, the Lokayukta court today ordered issue of summons to him, his son B Y Raghavendra, MP, and five other ’benamidars’ in a case over alleged denotification of land in Bhadravathi in Shimoga district.

Judge N K Sudhindra Rao further directed all the seven accused to appear before him on September 25.

The five benamidars are -- B K Somashekhar, his wife B S Uma Devi, sister B K Radhamani, his mother Adi Lakshmamamma and one H V Manjunath, who was asked to execute the sale deed in favour of Dhavalagiri Properties, owned by Yeddyurappa’s family members.

While pronouncing the order, the court made its observation on the report of Deputy Commissioner Shinmoga Vedamurthy who stated that no irregularisation had taken place (which was incorrect), and sought to bring it to the notice of the Chief Secretary.

Complainant Vinod alleged that Yeddyurappa had abused his office and denotified 69 acres of land at Bhadravathi in 2010.

He charged the former chief minister with having used the benamidars to get the lands transferred in the name of Dhavalagiri Properties, two months after denotifying them.

Vinod also alleged that more than 250 acres of forest land at the Reserve Forest in Bhadravathi was denotified between 2010-2011 and that Yeddyurappa had amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Niue? What’s new? Last week, India quietly established formal diplomatic relations with Niue, a South Pacific island of 1,400 inhabitants, which is better known as the world’s first "Wi-Fi nation", in which free wireless Internet access is provided throughout the country.

Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed and Prime Minister of Niue Toke Talagi signed a joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Niue, at Cook Islands, on Aug 30, the external affairs ministry said here Tuesday.

The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the the 16-nation Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in which India participates as a dialogue partner.

Niue is a member of regional bodies such as the Pacific Island Forum, the Pacific Community, the UNESCO and the WTO.

Better known the "Rock of Polynesia", Niue is 2,400 km northeast of New Zealand in a triangle between Tonga to the southwest, the Samoas to the northwest and the Cook Islands to the southeast.

A self-governing island, Niue is in free association with New Zealand, its biggest trading partner.

Except for defence and foreign relations, Niue runs its own affairs. All Niueans are New Zealand citizens.
