Singapore-Sikh appointed as country’s Army chief

Singapore has appointed Brigadier General Ravinder Singh as its next army chief, the first Sikh in nearly 30 years to be given the force’s baton. Singh, 41, takes over from Major-General Chan Chun Sing on March 25, Straits Times reported. A Singaporean of Indian origin, Singh is currently Deputy Se cretary (Technology) at the Defence Ministry. He joined the Singapore Armed Forces in December 1982.

AI plane overshoots runway near Aizawl, no injuries

In a narrow escape for 140 air passengers, an Air India plane ferrying defence personnel and their families overshot the runway and suffered tyre bursts while landing at Lengpui airport near Aizawl, airport sources said on Monday. No one was injured in the incident which occurred on Sunday, they sai d. The Airbus landed at the Lengpui airport and overshot the runway, requiring the pilot to apply the brakes harder. This led three of its tyres to burst, the sources said. A special flight for defence personnel operates between Kolkata and Aizawl every Sunday.

New Delhi: Both the precious metals surpassed all previous records to hit new highs Monday. While gold surged Rs 200 to Rs 21,420 per 10 grams on rising seasonal demand, silver rose by Rs 1,250 to Rs 54,450 per kg on heavy buying by stockists and industrial units, amid firm global cues.
