Mangalore University firm on intake

MANGALORE: Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said on Wednesday that degree colleges affiliated to it cannot admit more students than the intake fixed by the university for postgraduate courses. The colleges could admit 10 per cent more students than the intake for the undergraduate courses after getting permission from the university, he said.

PADUBIDRI : Kids attending an anganavdi which is functioning in a private building inthe heart of the town of Padubidri, are virtually confined to the four walls of the building,as if they have been placed under house arrest, courtesy the deplorable conditionsprevailing outside the building.Years ago, following lack of space for a local anganavdi, the local Mahila Mandalimembers had allowed the Anganavdi to function from their building behind the Padubidri Society. A Balavana had also been constructed and handed over by the mandali. But the building is today crying for attention due to the neglect of the local gram panchayat.If the kids attending the anganavadi have to enter the building they have to walk amidst the bushes and shrubs that have grown in the area trying to avoid some thorny bushes.

BPCL hikes petrol prices by Rs. 2.96; IOC, HPCL to follow suit

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on Tuesday hiked petrol prices by about Rs. 2.96 a litre effective midnight tonight, and other state-owned oil companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) will follow suit on Wednesday. The Oil Ministry on Tuesday gave the three companies a go-ahead to raise petrol prices after international crude oil prices touched $90 per barrel.

India moots tie-up on ‘contract farming’

MUSCAT: Oman could strengthen domestic availability of food grains by entering into ‘contract farming’ with Indian farmers, a senior Indian government official suggested here yesterday. “Indian law does not allow foreign companies to buy land there and therefore, Omani companies can enter into a contract farming relationship for producing the type of crop they want,” Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of Planning Commission, told Times of Oman in an exclusive interview.
