DUBAI - Car windows were smashed and some people were injured in a clash involving a group of illegal Indonesian workers in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Monday, the Arab News daily reported on Tuesday. The incident puts new focus on Indonesian workers in the kingdom following the furore over the reports of torture of Indonesian housemaids.

A group of children who were held hostage by a 17-year-old at a nursery school in eastern France have been released unharmed. The teenager, who was armed with at least one sword, was detained by police just before 1pm local time after the arrival of a specialist unit of the national force, accompanied by two psychiatrists. He had taken 20 children hostage at the Charles Fourier pre-school in Besancon at 9am (8am GMT) but released most of them about an hour later.

India moots tie-up on ‘contract farming’

MUSCAT: Oman could strengthen domestic availability of food grains by entering into ‘contract farming’ with Indian farmers, a senior Indian government official suggested here yesterday. “Indian law does not allow foreign companies to buy land there and therefore, Omani companies can enter into a contract farming relationship for producing the type of crop they want,” Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of Planning Commission, told Times of Oman in an exclusive interview.

India to get first Super Hercules airlifter next week

The first of India’s six C-130J Super Hercules airlifters, considered the world’s most advanced transport aircraft, will be formally delivered on December 16 at a ceremony in Marietta, Georgia. Two of the planes purchased from the US in a $1 billion deal, will be flown to India in early 2011 while two more will arrive in early summer and the last two will be delivered in late summer of 2011, its manufacturer Lockheed Martin has announced.
