Ban on Kambala : HC serves notice to DCs of Udupi and DK

Mangaluru/ Bengaluru : Following ban on the Kambala in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada region, the High Court has served a notice to the Deputy Commissioners of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada seeking explanation on the ban.
The notice was served after the members of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Kambala Samithi had submitted a petition to the High Court seeking removal of ban on the sport in the two districts. Responding to the petition, Judge Abdul Nazeer has sent a notice to the DCs seeking objection on the ban and has postponed the hearing to December 2.
The petitioners stated that the Kambala Committees of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts had submitted a memorandum to the DCs seeking revoke on the ban. The members also stated that the ban on Kambala was based on a misconception of the sport.
Kambala is a popular traditional folk sport in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and has an history of 1,200 years in Tulunadu region.
The ban on Kambala was imposed by the Department of Animal husbandry and Veterinary Sciences based on a Supreme Court order dated May 7, 2014 citing reasons that bullocks were to be used only for farming and they cannot be made to run and thrashed during the sport.
Opposing the ban a massive protest will be held in Mangaluru on Saturday, November 29 where nearly 25,000 persons including farmers, Kambala lovers and members of voluntary organisations, along with 200 pairs of buffaloes from different parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada would participate.
