Priority being given to education: Dr. V. S.Acharya
Udupi: Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya said on Saturday that the State Government was giving priority to the education sector and had earmarked Rs. 12,284 crore to this sector for 2011-12. He was speaking after laying the foundation stones for buildings of government industrial training institutes at Alevoor and Perdoor villages in Udupi district. The buildings of the ITI in these villages would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 crore each.
Dr. Acharya said that small-scale industries were the backbone of the country. Their contribution to exports of the country stood at 40 per cent. Small-scale industries could flourish because they usually employed students passing out of the industrial training institutes. This showed the vital role played by ITIs. Hence, the Union and State governments were committed to providing good infrastructure to the ITIs. The ITIs should not only give education to students but also aim at excellence. Efforts would be made to start a pre-university college at Perdoor village in the academic year 2011-12, he said.
