Ugly scenes and raised tempers were witnessed on the premises of the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) office here on Thursday for the third day in a row as the number of parents and students protesting against “discrepancies” in the II Pre-University (PU) results swelled.
Despite the heavy presence of police personnel, members of students’ organisations joined the protest, which threatened to go out of control several times through the day. Despite DPUE Director Sushama Godbole finally intervening and calling a few parents for a discussion, the situation did not ease.
There were raised voices and sloganeering, but the lack of response from DPUE officials irked the irate students and parents further. To gain control of the situation, an official even appealed to the protesters to keep calm, using the police’s public announcement system. In fact, even police personnel were not spared from hearing about “glaring mistakes” in the marks cards.
While alleged inconsistencies in their scores were the primary reason for the anger of students and parents, the fear of those discrepancies having an effect on the Common Entrance Test (CET) ranking and seat allotment has resulted in the demand by protesters for postponement of CET counselling.
Two students said they had good marks in practical subjects and an overall average of 70 per cent, but it was of no use as they had got single-digit marks in some of the theory papers.
