Woman loses life at the hands of sorcerer in bid to drive away evil spirit

Print Madikeri: Even as the nation is making attempts for digital proliferation, incidents of people falling prey to fake ’god men’ and sorcerer keep getting reported.
In one such tragic incident, a woman was found dead in a mysterious way at the residence of a sorcerer at Boyikere in Madikeri on Monday morning and in connection to her death, a sorcerer and four others have been nabbed.
The deceased is Asha (50) from Ibnavalavadi and she was found dead at the residence of one Dharani, where Durgadatta Kalidasa Swamiji, a self-proclaimed sorcerer has been living. It is said that Asha was being possessed by spirits and she had gone to the sorcerer to seek relief from the same. The burn injuries on the body now suggest that she must have been killed by the sorcerer.
The Swami used to hold special prayers and rituals at the residence every Sunday and even on October 11, one such prayer sessions was held in which Asha had taken part. On the same evening Asha fell severely ill and by mid-night she was reportedly possessed by a spirit.
As per sources, the Swami had whipped Asha brutally, due to which she died on the spot. She was found dead on Monday morning in the very same prayer room.
When the news about Asha’s death came to light locals and her relatives gheraoed the residence of the Swami.
As per the complaint filed by the deceased’s family a murder case stands registered against the sorcerer.
Kalidasa Swami, his accomplice Dharani and Dharani’s children Kavan and Bhuvan have been nabbed.
The Swami had changed his named from Mohommed Iqbal Siddapura to Durgadatta Kalidasa Swami in 2015 and he has been living at the residence of Dharani over the last two years, promising to ward off evil spirits possessing people.
