Print A married Indian man was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison by an Australian court for raping a woman to spoil her marriage prospects.
Ajay Pal Singh Thiara who was jailed also faces deportation once he finishes his sentence.
The South Australian district Judge David Smith, who read out his sentence, said he gave the convict a five year non-parole period because he could face retribution in India [ Images ] from the girl’s family.
Though married, Thiara raped the Sikh woman, who was not named in December 2009 as he was angry and jealous when she went off to meet a suitor her family had arranged for her to marry, Judge Smith said.
The court was told that Thiara got drunk after proclaimed his love for the girl, tied her up and indecently assaulted and raped her.
"I take into account that there may be more shame and retribution in store for you on your return home to India at the end of your sentence but that is of small solace in comparison to what you have done," Smith was quoted as saying by Australian Associated Press.
The report said that the victim did not immediately report him to police because she felt ashamed and defiled. But she changed her mind after he assaulted her again in February 2010, stripping her naked and filming it on his mobile phone.
The judge said Thiara’s excuse was that he was in love and did not want to lose her. "Your intention, you said, was to ruin her so that no other man would want her," Smith said adding the rape was violent and protracted, shameful and degrading.
"You deliberately defiled this young woman out of abject selfishness and jealousy. You have shamed her, her family, yourself and your family," he said. Thiara came to Australia with his wife and worked as a taxi driver while studying.
