Pregnant Dalit woman beaten up for refusing to remove cow carcass in Gujarat

Print Six persons have been arrested for assaulting a five-month pregnant Dalit woman and her family for refusing to dispose of the carcass of a cow in a village in north Gujarat.
The woman, Sangeeta Ranawasia, her husband and a few others were severely beaten up the villagers and the injured have been admitted to the civil hospital in Palanpur.
The arrested people, who belong to Kshatriya community, have been booked under prevention of atrocity act, rioting, intimidation and other charges.
According to details available, Natavarsinh had asked Ms. Sangeeta and her family members to clear the carcass of a cow from his field. But the woman’s family refused to do the work, saying they have stopped the practice of disposing of dead animals.
“They started beating us when we refused to remove the carcass from Natavarsinh’s field. They told us that it is our duty and job to dispose of dead animals, so we cant say no to it,” said Ramesh Ranawasia, Ms. Sangeeta’s husband. Mr. Ramesh sustained minor injuries in the attack and was later discharged after primary treatment.
Ever since the Dalit unrest sparked by the Una incident, Dalit community members have asserted that they will not dispose the remains of dead animals in the village.
It may be noted that around 2,500 animals die in a day in the State and most of them are disposed of by the Dalits. Following the Una flogging incident, Dalits carried out a month-long protest against the rising atrocities and have demanded lands from the government for farming inorder to earn a decent living.
Half-a-dozen incidents of violence and clashes have been reported in villages after Dalits have refused to clear bovine hides since the last two months.
