MANGALURU: The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Kambala Committee will on Tuesday make a representation to chief minister Siddaramaiah during the Belagavi session, to renotify the order permitting holding of kambala with certain conditions. 
 The decision was taken at a committee meeting headed by its president Barkuru Shantaram Shetty, held at Miyar on Sunday, which was attended by over 500 people. Later, high court advocate Rajashekar presented his views about the legal hurdles in the issue.

 Kambala expert Gunapala Kadamba told TOI, "We will give a representation through Udupi district minister Pramod Madhwaraj and DK district minster B Ramanath Rai to the CM, law minister TB Jayachandra and animal husbandry minister A Manju. The committee delegation will also present research papers, which disprove that anatomy of buffalo is not meant for racing."

 He said they would put pressure on the government to renotify the order on December 17, 2015, permitting them to hold kambala with certain conditions, which was withdrawn later.

 The Miyar meet was unanimous on this decision. Regarding organizing a jatha, Kadamba said it will be taken up later, if needed, after meeting the CM on Tuesday.

 The delegation to Belagavi would include committee president, secretary Vijayakumar Kanginamane, Gunapala Kadamba, T Naveenchandra Alva, traditional kambala committee president Sudhakar Shetty and secretary Ashok Mada, committee members Shashidhar Shetty, Bhaskar Kotian, Pramod Shetty, Sukumar Shetty and convener Seetaram Shetty. 

 The Karnataka High Court recently passed an interim order banning all Kambala races in the state until the disposal of a PIL filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India. The court took note of submissions made on behalf of the state by Madhusudhan Naik, advocate general, who informed that the government has already withdrawn its order allowing kambala events under certain regulations. This matter is now scheduled for a hearing on December 2.

 Kadamba said there is already a cloud on traditional kambala being held this year and this will affect its continuity, adding that he had been advocating about eliminating cruelty in races, which were not taken seriously. "The traditional kambalas have been put under pressure due to its commercialisation," he rued.
