Sangha opposes partial cancellation of Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru-Karwar train
Udupi/Bengaluru/Karwar: Days after the South Western Railway decided to partially cancel the Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru-Karwar tri-weekly day train, the Railway Yatri Sangha in the district has strongly objected to the move.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Sangha president R L Dias said that the train had to continue as usual as it benefitted several people travelling between Mangaluru and Karwar. However, he added that action should be taken against unnecessary delay in arrival of the train. He said that he had the tentative time table for the Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru-Karwar night train that could be taken up for consideration.
Dias said that the Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru weekly train was sanctioned by former railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge and was inaugurated as Salem-Kannur-Mangaluru train, but it had been a major blow for passengers as it was earlier destined to reach Mangaluru via Hassan.
“The Konkan Railway was completed in 1998 and has its jurisdiction from Ullal Bridge till Madgaon. About Rs 4.5 crore of the annual income from Mangaluru port and other industries go to Southern Railway; thus if a Mangaluru division is formed under Konkan Railway, the Mangaluru-Mumbai railway line could be doubled with this income,” he said.
Further, Dias said that the Sangha had about seven years ago suggested an alternative Nandikur-Karkala-Ujire-Charmadi-Mudigere line. But the Railways failed to conduct a survey. If the line was commissioned, it would sort out the problem in delay of the Mangaluru-Yeshwantpur train, he added.
