In Pak, mad scramble for theatre tickets too

BARNALA: While there is excitement in the entire region over the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final match to played in Mohali on Wednesday, the situation is no different in Lahore and other parts of Pakistan.

Big arrangements have been made for the screening of the high voltage match and people have booked tickets for themselves in advance for seeing the match at cinema halls in Lahore. People have booked themselves in various auditoriums and restaurants in advance for seeing the screening of the match on March 30.

Many people are still trying their level best to get tickets at the places screening the match. However, now with the match drawing nearer many cricket enthusiasts are being left disappointed with several places screening the match saying that they are already booked. The weekly schedule of the upscale Lahore cinema, DHA, has prominently declared the screening of the Indo-Pak match from 2 pm onwards on March 30. Same is the case with other places like Cinestar cinema, besides the Lahore international expo center.

Arrangements have learnt to have been made at Liberty and Gulberg markets for showing the match on big screens, apart from the expo center. "I wanted to each the match with a big crowd and called up many cinema halls and restaurants but all places are already booked to capacity", rued Amna Usmani, a lecturer at the Lahore based Beaconhouse university. She said in an email, "Cricket fever is rising in Lahore and it will reach fever pitch when the match is played on Wednesday afternoon. Many youngsters are seeing this match as an opportunity to ease relations between the two nations. And they don’t want things to turn sour, whatever the outcome of the match. I am not a cricket aficionado but due to the excitement surrounding this match, I would want to see it at any cost."

Lahore based Shafiq Butt, a cricket fan said that with demand for tickets rising, the cost for tickets has gone up from Rs 500 up to Rs 1000 but now even paying that high price is not getting you tickets. Young Sobia and her husband Qaisar said, "It is not a matter of who wins and who loses as both teams are fighters. It will be a win-win situation if people accept the outcome of the match without getting angry or agitated." She said they were trying to get tickets for the screening of the match in any theater, but knows that’s unlikely. Pakistan is thrilled about the match and with the Indian Prime Minister inviting Pakistan PM Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, the enthusiasm has increased manifold. People want to see the match at public places but these are already booked, said writer Saqib Maqsood.

IAF on call at Fortress Mohali for India-Pak Wordl Cup semifinal

CHANDIGARH: Welcome to fortress Chandigarh, the city which, along with Mohali and Panchkula, resembles an armed garrison. With anti-aircraft guns placed strategically and Mohali declared a no-fly zone, no stone is being left unturned to secure the city before the prime ministers of India and Pakistan — along with a host of dignitaries from both countries — arrive for the India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal on Wednesday.

Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters are on standby for air surveillance and fighter jets at Ambala are just a moment away from scrambling in case of emergency. Foolproof security is not confined to the multi-tier system that includes Special Protection Group (SPG), National Security Guard (NSG), and Central and state police forces. For, also roped in is the National Technical Research Organization (NTRO) — a highly specialized technical intelligence gathering agency under the National Security Adviser.

A high level source told TOI that NTRO is tasked with air surveillance and it`s expected to use Israeli-made unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). It`s further learned that NTRO`s Dehradun base is working behind the scenes. The UAVs are also capable of detecting airborne aggressors and were used during the Commonwealth Games. Wednesday`s match will be the first between the arch rivals on Indian soil after the 2008 Mumbai attacks by Pakistan-based terrorists.

Special teams of the SPG and NSG landed here on the Sunday to take charge of security. The Mohali stadium will be completely under the command and control of Central agencies from March 29 to 30. The main internal security mechanism will be in the hands of SPG. Pakistani security will coordinate with SPG.

Special teams of elite NSG commandos armed with Heckler & Koch 9mm MP-5 sub-machine guns, corner shot guns, Glock 17 or Sig Sauer pistols and poison-tipped knives, would take charge of the outer field. Some of these sophisticated weapons were purchased by the NSG following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The remaining layers of the security would be handled by Central and state police forces.

Snipers were deployed on Sunday on all high-rise buildings adjoining Hotel Taj-17, where players of both teams are staying.

Mohali bomb threat a hoax, police say

India and Pakistan will play at the PCA stadium at Mohali on Wednesday. Both the teams are staying at the Taj Hotel.

Chandigarh: Officials at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium in neighbouring Mohali went through anxious moments on Sunday after a caller told the police a bomb had been placed at the venue of the March 30 India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal. The calls turned out to be a hoax, police said.

Four calls were made from a mobile phone number to the police control rooms in Mohali. "We have traced the address of the caller. It is in a slum rehabilitation colony in Palsora town here but now nobody lives there. We have made a special team to nab the accused by ascertaining the location of the mobile phone tower," Neeraj Sarna, inspector in Chandigarh cyber crime cell, told IANS.

"Four calls were made to Chandigarh and Mohali police controls room from the same number. We would arrest the accused very soon," he said.
