Netizens celebrate Cup Dussehra
MUMBAI: If the semi-final match against Pakistan was likened to World War III, India’s clash with Sri Lanka has taken an epic twist. Passionate fans-who can’t be bothered about being politically correct-have taken to comparing India and Sri Lanka to Ram and Raavan respectively.
One of the most common messages doing the rounds of a popular social networking site, on the eve of the World Cup final, goes something like this: "India (Ram) married the World Cup (Sita) in 1983, but in 1996 Sri Lanka (Ravan) took Sita away. Now after 14 years of vanvaas, Ram meets Ravan and we all know the result."
Needless to say, the same message in its various avatars is finding itself posted and reposted across online profiles, and in SMSs and emails doing the rounds.
And then there are Indian cricket fans who have begun wishing one another "Happy Dussehra in advance" alluding to the Hindu festival that celebrates the Ayodhyan prince’s victory over the Lankan king.
One poster, tongue firmly in cheek, has posted what pulp Hindi news channels might carry as a headline if India were to lose the match: "Ravan ne Ram se badla liya. Ravan ki Kalyug mein jeet (Ravan avenges defeat at the hands of Ram. In Kalyug, Raavan wins)."
Now, while the match has united the nation into one collective jingoistic crowd, it has also divided fans into the ’haves’ and the ’have-nots’.
Facebookers who have managed to get their paws on a ticket to Wankhede Stadium have taken to posting photos of the pass; sometimes gloatingly grinning from behind the much-coveted stub.
There are also those who have opportunistically used the Cup finals as a ploy for April Fool jokes. One Mp3 file titled ’Match-fixing India-Sri Lanka Tape’ is doing the rounds with the message ’Listen to the phone call made by a bookie to Dhoni. It’s a shame, Sri Lanka will win tomorrow’s match’. Gullible folk who click on the link are greeted with audio that screams "April Fool banaya".
While the revelry is apparent, there are, however, a few students who are not at all pleased that they have to answer a test paper on the day of the cricket final. They include BA, BMS and BFI students from across Mumbai who have been using the social media to express their displeasure at the State Board and the Controller of Examinations with the common refrain: ’If tomorrow is a public holiday, why do we have to give exams?’
Still, examinees should take heart. Tomorrow, along with nearly a lakh Mumbai students who will be answering their papers, twenty-two men in blue will face
