Print The ‘Spirit of Mumbai’ once again came to the fore – when people with open arms helped each other as the Maximum City faced 29/8, the second-worst incident of the deluge.
Because of inundation and flood-like situation, people were seen stranded at various places – in roads, in suburban stations, in bus stops and footpath. At this time of crisis, people came out to help out each other – when they waded through knee-deep, waist-deep water and even till the level of the neck. With hand-in-hand, giving support to each other, people helped each other.
WhatsApp groups were flooded with messages about details of persons and organizations helping each other along with location coordinates. The temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras offered help to the people in terms of shelter and food. The Ganpati mandals also extended help to the stranded people by offering them water and snacks. Some of the restaurants offered discounts. The famous Siddhivinayak temple too extended help to the people.
Tell me your problem: CM picks up calls
The controls rooms of Mumbai were flooded with messages. Whether it is the disaster management unit of Mantralaya, the state secretariat, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai police, Mumbai traffic police – the landlines continue to buzz. “Tell me your problem,” said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as he picked up the receiver of a ringing phone and responded when he visited the Mantralaya control room to review the situation.
PM speaks to CM, asks people to be safe
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and urged Mumbaikars to be safe. “Urge people of Mumbai and surrounding areas to stay safe & take all essential precautions in the wake of heavy rain,” the PM tweeted and also assured the help of the Centre to the Maharashtra government in mitigating the situation.
