College teachers’ association supports supplementary exam for final year degree students
Association says the recent directive of Principal Secretary, Higher Education, has vindicated its stand
The Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) has said that the recent directive of Principal Secretary, Higher Education, to the universities to allow those degree students failed in the fifth and sixth semesters (which is last year of three-year course) to write supplementary examination along with the immediate next semester examination has vindicated the stand of the association.
The Principal Secretary, Higher Education, wrote to all universities on August 8, 2017, that the Karnataka State Higher Education Council in its meeting on August 20, 2016, took a decision on the same and hence all universities should take steps to implement it. The council took the decision in the interest of students to give them a chance to pass the failed subjects as otherwise they would have to waste a year.
President of the association Ummappa Poojary P. told The Hindu that college teachers supported the decision of the council and directive of the government.
He said AMUCT, in its annual general body meeting on this July 16, had taken a decision on the same and written to K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor of the university, on August 2.
Mr. Poojary said, “AMUCT had resolved to request the university to conduct supplementary exam to the failed students in V semester (odd semester) along with VI semester (even semester) exam and also for VI semester failed students immediately after the announcement of the results, in selected examination centres.”
He said as per the decision of the council, fifth semester students get a chance to clear the pending subjects in the final sixth semester examination while completing a course. Hence, they would not waste a year. But if the sixth semester failed, students were not given a chance to appear for a supplementary examination immediately after the announcement of results they would have to waste a year. Hence, the college teachers are for conducting a supplementary examination. Allowing sixth semester failed students to appear in the immediate next semester examination would not help students as they would have to waste a year.
Mr. Poojary said that there were delay, anomalies, and confusion in the announcement of undergraduate results a year ago because the university in 2015 allowed all failed students, irrespective of semesters, to write the examination along with the next immediate semester examination on an experimental basis. It created a mess.
The president said that the supplementary examination for sixth semester failed students should be held only in selected examination centres to save the examination cost and sparing of human resource.
