A British man in Dubai on a tourist visa died in police custody of ‘natural causes’ on Tuesday, a source at Bur Dubai Police station said

Dubai: A man in Dubai on a tourist visa died in police custody of ‘natural causes’ on Tuesday, according to a source at Bur Dubai Police station.

The source said a police autopsy conducted on Lee Bradley, 39, a Briton, ruled out any torture. The formal report will be issued next week, he added.

The source said the man, a guest at the Burj Al Arab, was arrested on Saturday following a complaint by the management that he had attacked a Nepalese housekeeper.

The Burj Al Arab management confirmed it had made such a complaint.

A hotel source said the Nepalese housekeeper was sent to Bradley’s room after he requested assistance. He, however, reportedly attacked the woman and threw her out of the room.

“She suffered injuries and bruises on her body for which she had to seek treatment,” the hotel said.

The hotel source said the police arrived at the hotel and arrested Bradley. “We learnt of his death from the police three days after the incident,” the source said.

The police source denied any torture of the suspect as was reported in a section of the press. He said that, following Bradley’s arrest, interrogators took his statement and he was about to be referred to the public prosecutor.

Torture claim denied

Bradley’s cellmate, however, informed the duty officer on Tuesday that Bradley had vomited and fallen unconscious. “An ambulance rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the source said.

“The torture story is a total fabrication and distortion of facts. The forensic report to be released soon will identify the exact cause of the ‘natural death’ of Bradley. We never beat suspects in police custody. Bradley’s case was very simple and he was cooperating with the interrogators,” the police said.

He said beating prisoners or people in detention is forbidden as per the Dubai Police policy and rules.

Ruzina Hassan, political and media officer at the British Embassy in Dubai, said the embassy was alerted of the case.

“We can confirm that British national, Lee Brown, died on April 12 in police custody. We are providing consular assistance for the family; it’s a difficult time so our thoughts are with the family at this time,” she said.

“We have been in contact with Dubai Police at the highest level since this tragic situation happened. We have also stressed the importance of a full investigation to Dubai Police.”

She said the police have assured the embassy that they were investigating the case and officials from the consular section are in close contact with Dubai Police.

“We are also in constant contact with the family and are providing consular support at this time,” she said

Earlier news: Britain asks Dubai to investigate death in custody

DUBAI, April 14 (Reuters) - Britain is pressing police in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai to investigate the death of a British tourist who died in police custody this month, a British embassy spokesman said on Thursday.

"We can confirm that a British citizen died in police custody and we’re very much aware of the case," the spokesman said, identifying the tourist as Lee Bradley Brown.

"What we are doing is working closely with Dubai police to pressure them to investigate the circumstances. We spoke to them at the highest level and highlighted the seriousness of it."

Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reported on Thursday that Brown had been staying at the luxury Burj al-Arab hotel but was beaten to death after being arrested for swearing. It cited inmates of a Dubai jail who spoke to Brown’s family.

A Dubai police spokesman was not available to comment.

Dubai’s foreign population expanded rapidly in recent years as expatriates flocked to the Gulf Arab trade and tourism hub for its tax-free earnings and year-round sunshine.

The changes have challenged the Emirati population, now vastly outnumbered by foreigners, raising concerns that the rapid pace of growth is a threat to their social and religious identity in what remains a deeply conservative region.

The authorities have prosecuted some cases where foreigners were found in sexual or romantic encounters or drunk in public.

A British man and a female friend were sentenced to one month in jail last year for kissing intimately in public and consuming alcohol.
