Tiger Airways will return to the air on Friday, albeit on a reduced schedule, after being given the all-clear from the air safety regulator.

Tiger resumed ticket sales immediately after the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) lifted its six-week suspension of the budget airline on Wednesday.

But flights will resume only on the Melbourne to Sydney route on Friday and Tiger says it will shortly announce the gradual resumption of other routes.

The first Tiger flight in six weeks will leave Melbourne Airport for Sydney at 11.50am (AEST) on Friday for a price of $179.90 return.

"The airline is resuming services with a simplified flight program in order to focus on flying popular and profitable routes," Tiger management said in a statement.

CASA grounded the airline on July 1, citing concerns over pilot training, safety management and its overall safety systems.

It also followed two incidents where Tiger pilots flew too low into Melbourne airports in June.

Announcing the removal of the ban in Brisbane, CASA aviation safety director John McCormick said a new set of conditions had been imposed on the airline.

Those conditions cover additional training for pilots, improved pilot rostering and fatigue management systems, and changes to Tiger’s safety management system.

The number of sectors Tiger Airways may fly is also initially limited to a maximum of 18 a day during August.

Mr McCormick said Tiger had demonstrated to CASA it could comply with the new conditions and he’d be confident to fly with the airline "and I’d put my family on it as well".

But he said CASA would be keeping a close watch through scheduled surveillance and regular spot checks.

"We will also be meeting regularly with the airline to review ongoing safety performance and compliance with the conditions on the airline’s operations," he told reporters.

He said all pilots had undergone simulated flight training during the suspension and he hoped Tiger’s public image had not been damaged beyond repair.

"Tiger Airways has cooperated with CASA’s investigation and provided all the relevant documentation," he said.

Tiger will have three return flights between Melbourne and Sydney on Friday, with the first flight out of Sydney leaving at 1.55pm.

In its reduced schedule, Tiger will drop two of its Airbus fleet and set up a single crew base in Melbourne.

"The crew base at Adelaide Airport will be closed and the crew base at Avalon Airport will be temporarily suspended," the Tiger statement said.

The airline says those staff will be offered redeployment to Melbourne.

It will also offer a flight transfer or refund to passengers whose pre-booked tickets will be hit by the new schedule.

Even before the grounding Tiger was dropping four routes this month: Brisbane-Sydney, Sydney-Sunshine Coast and between Melbourne Airport and Mackay and Rockhampton in Queensland.

Despite a turbulent six weeks, Tiger says it is committed to a long-term future in Australia and has vowed to win back customer confidence.

"The airline remains committed to regaining the confidence of its customers through an enhanced focus on punctuality and convenience," Tiger said in a statement.

Increased operations after August will be subject to CASA approval.
