A driver attached to the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) helped prevent a recent robbery bid an ATM near its campus. At the time of the incident, the ATM had about Rs 22 lakh in it.
Lingaraju was returning after dropping one of the staff members when a pack of street dogs diverted his attention to a group of robbers trying to break open the ATM machine. He rushed to Amruthahalli police station, which was a kilometre away, and alerted the cops.
“Around 2 am on Sunday, I was returning after dropping a staff at 18th cross in Amruthahalli. Near our campus, I heard dogs barking. So I took a deviation towards the Canara bank ATM. I saw five people trying to open the ATM machine as one person stood guard on the road,” he said.
“I went to Amruthahalli police station and reported the robbery attempt. The station in-charge sent a constable with me. When they spotted us, all of them fled the scene,” Lingaraju said, adding: “Though three more constables arrived within a few minutes, they could not apprehend the robbers.”
A constable at Amruthahalli police station confirmed the incident. “The robbers had managed to open the machine, but left the money and escaped as they saw a constable approaching. Later, the bank officials came and took out all the money that was left in the machine.”
Security chief of the research centre, M Chandrasekhar, said, “We are happy that Lingaraju helped in preventing a robbery though it was not his official duty.”
