Delhi: parents refuse to take back abandoned boy

Print New Delhi: In Delhi, a six month old infant Chiku was abandoned by his parents after he suffered a brain haemorrhage. Doctors now say that he is medically fit to be taken home. Child rights agencies say serious action will be taken against the parents if they refuse to take him back. For the six month old baby, the nurses at the St Stephen’s Hospital in Delhi are the only family he has as of now. Chiku suffered a brain haemorrhage during the delivery. Soon after, his parents abandoned him saying they can’t look after the child.
“When the hospital staff tried to contact them, they were abused by the father and refused to meet doctors and talk about the child,” said Dr Sudhir Joseph, Director, St Stephen’s Hospital.
Chiku’s parents refused to speak on record but they allege the hospital is to blame for his current state. They are yet to take legal action against the hospital.
“If their allegations are proved the hospital has to bear the consequences”, said Dr Joseph.
A four member committee was later set up at the Lok Nayak Government hospital to assess the baby’s health at St Stephens Hospital. Doctors say the child’s mental development may be delayed but he certainly cannot be termed a spastic and is now medically fit to be discharged.
But with the parents still unwilling to take Chiku home. The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has now served them two legal notices warning them they could be arrested for abandoning their child under Indian law.
St Stephens Hospital has been home to this baby for 6 months now so he is lovingly called Stephen. But the hospital staff are still hoping the child goes back to his real home.
