The Hindu District Superintendent of Police, K.Sanjaykumar, trying to pacify an agitated crowd of devotees who were held up for hours together in the traffic block near Laha on the main trunk road leading to Sabarimala on Wednesday

The holy hillock of Sabarimala witnessed unprecedented rush as the influx of pilgrims to the sacred grove turned out to be heavy on Wednesday.

The police have blocked the vehicular traffic at Plappally on the main trunk road to Sabarimala from Wednesday morning in an effort to ease the human pressure at the pilgrim centre.

The long-winding line of vehicles held up in the block was found even beyond 45 kilometres away from Pampa at 6 pm.

Hundreds of pilgrims, majority of them hailing from the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, were stranded on the road in the forests. Many pilgrims turned agitated due to the long wait on the road and they started blocking even the KSRTC buses near Laha.

The issue was resolved and the agitated pilgrims were pacified with the timely intervention of the Pathanamthitta SP, K.Sanjaykumar, who incidentally reached the spot on his way to Pampa.

Mismanagement alleged

A retired Government official who is presently doing voluntary service for a non-governmental organisation at Pampa told The Hindu that, to a great extent, the traffic problem was due to the mismanagement of the vehicular traffic by the police.

Lack of co-ordination among various police officials deployed at Pampa, Sannidhanam and at various points on the main trunk road has also contributed to the problem.

Though the police claim deployment of as many as 1300 cops at Pampa alone for crowd and traffic management, their presence was found meager in the crowded places. This situation was reportedly making things difficult for those policemen who are doing their duty in the right earnest.

Over-estimation of the crowd

There were reports that the over-estimation of the crowd at Pampa might have made the police authorities to block the vehicular traffic on the road at Plappally, leaving the pilgrims at the receiving end.

However, the police released a few vehicles from Plappally following intervention of Pathanamthitta SP, later, around 8 pm. Mr Sanjaykumar was in Pampa to monitor the action launched against unauthorised vendors and to check infiltration into the main queue leading to Sannidhanam through forests.

The police have started blocking the pilgrims’ flow to Sannidhanam from Pampa too at definite intervals from Wednesday morning to ease the congestion at the holy hillock.

Pilgrims had to wait for 12 to 14 hours in the thickly packed barricades beyond Appachimedu, 3.5 km away from the Sannidhanam, for the holy darshan.

Thousands of pilgrims are camping at the Sannidhanam for the Makarajyoti darshan on Friday.
