Declared dead, man wakes up on way to morgue

NEW DELHI: A victim of road rage literally walked out of his death on Sunday Afternoon. Family members claim that Sandeep (27), a resident of Sultanpuri, was referred to AIIMS Trauma Centre after he was stabbed by two youths on the thigh. He was declared dead by doctors at the facility but later when he was being taken to the mortuary, Sandeep "suddenly woke up", claimed the family. Sandeep is now out of danger, claims the family.

The hospital administration, however, has denied the family’s claim saying Sandeep was always under their observation. "It was due to the proper care at our facility that saved him. The family members created a ruckus outside without even bothering to check with us,’’ said a senior resident doctor at the hospital.

Curiously, police blamed some "local political leaders" for spreading the rumour. In the meantime the Mongolpuri cops had flashed the message of Sandeep’s death on their wireless after family members claimed negligence on part of the doctors.

"We later went to the hospital where doctors said Sandeep was still alive. Sandeep’s mother had initially panicked when she was not allowed into the ICU. When Sandeep was being taken out of the cabin, his mother thought that he had passed away. Actually, he was only being referred to a better hospital,’’ said a senior officer from Mongolpuri police station.

Police said Sandeep and his younger brother, who is a minor, was going to Mongolpuri on their bicycle on January 29 when their cycle hit two youths on the road. Following the incident a heated argument took place between both the sides and one of the youths stabbed Sandeep on his left thigh. Even as Sandeep was bleeding profusely, his brother ran back to their house in Sultanpuri to inform their parents. By the time the PCR rushed Sandeep to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, he was in a very serious condition.

"We arranged two units of blood and later sent him to AIIMS Trauma Centre around 2.30am. We also raided the area and arrested both the accused, who are now in jail,’’ said DCP (Outer), Chhaya Sharma.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered at Mongolpuri police station.

Cops said the news of Sandeep’s death created a lot of unrest in the area as local leaders came out to the streets to protest against his death. "The news that he was alive came as a big relief for all of us,’’ said the investigating officer.
