BANGALORE: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah commits to the citizens of the state that Karnataka will become a power surplus by 2017. "The state government has initiated several power projects to the tune of 18,000 mega watts both in conventional and non-conventional power sectors and these are in different stages of implementation. Karnataka will, in all probability be a power surplus state by 2017," he said at the inauguration of Elecrama 2014.

 The energy department had earlier said that by 2017, the state is going to add 2000 MW with the set up of Yeramus plant and share from NTPC’s plant in Bijapur. However, officials had made it very clear that of the 2000, 1400 MW can be transmitted even in 2014 but the technical inadequacy in the grid is a hurdle.

 However, studies by Centre for the Study of Science Technology and Policy (C-STEP) forecasts a continued power deficit for few years in the state. It says that this despite the installed capacity to reach 18,632 MW by 2017 and touch 28,083 MW in 2022.

Elecrama is an exhibition of companies showcasing the latest technological advancement in the manufacturing industry of electrical equipments used for transmission and distribution of power. "India is becoming a major sourcing destination for global players in the electrical equipment industry. This is why the theme of the exhibition is `go global’ to focus on global competitiveness of Indian products at competitive costs," said Sanjeev Sardana, chairman of Elecrama 2014.

 "ELECRAMA has grown to be the world’s largest show for electrical equipments from 220 V to 1200 KV and industrial electronics. The exhibition not only provides a platform for showcasing the global best technology but also provides opportunity for building strong relationship between the buyers and sellers," said Raj Eswaran, President, Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA).

IEEMA is a 66 year-old industry body which organises this show once in two years. This is the 11th edition of Elecrama. The trade show is being hosted for five days in the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre in Tumkur road.
 It is expected to have participants from over 100 countries and 1.25 lakh footfalls.
