Saudi to shun workers from Indonesia -paper

Print DUBAI (Yahoo!) - Saudi Arabia’s top recruitment body has suspended hiring workers from Indonesia amid an uproar over maid abuse in the kingdom, according to Saudi daily Arab News.
The recruitment committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry has told recruitment offices not to accept work visas for Indonesians after differences with Jakarta over hiring fees and salaries for maids, the newspaper reported.
The panel told Saudis "not to apply for new recruitment visas for Indonesia due to exorbitant charges and lack of qualified workers," according to the Arab News report.
Yahya Hassan al-Maqbool, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s recruitment committee chief, said in the report that the Saudi move followed a wide Indonesian media coverage of the abuse of maids by their Saudi employers.
A Saudi court in Medina last month sentenced a woman to three years in prison for stabbing, beating and burning her Indonesian house maid with an iron.
The gruesome image of Sumiati Binti Salan Mustapa, 23, shocked and outraged rights groups and labour activists as another example of abuse of women workers in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
Around 70% of the 1.2 million Indonesian workers in Saudi Arabia are employed as domestic helpers.
There has been diplomatic friction between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia over maid abuse cases, with Jakarta demanding better protection for its nationals.
Indonesia’s largest Muslim organisation Nahdlatul Ulama demanded late last year that the government should stop sending Indonesian citizens to Saudi Arabia.
More than 80,000 Indonesian maids flock to Saudi Arabia every year through employment agencies.
