Udupi, October 27: Cyclone Nilofar, building in the Arabian Sea, is due to hit India’s Gujarat state and Pakistan’s southern coastal areas on Friday morning, the Indian Meterological Department said.

While Karnataka was unaffected by Cyclone Hudhud earlier this month, it may not be entirely spared by the latest cyclone, Nilofar, brewing in the Arabian Sea.

The State has more rainfall in store in the next two days as the cyclone intensifies into a severe cyclonic storm and moves north towards Gujarat and Pakistan, according to the Met Centre.

The storm, packing winds of up to 125 kilometres per hour, comes after Cyclone HudHud hit India’s east coast earlier this month leaving some 20 people dead.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the open sea from Wednesday to Friday, and those already at sea have been told to come back to shore.

India has six categories of tropical storms based on wind speeds and damage expected, with Nilofar falling into category five, the second from top.

Cyclone Phailin, which struck India last October, had winds of up to 220 kph and caused extensive damage.

Coastal and south interior Karnataka will be most affected, with thundershowers expected in several districts here in the next two or three days, according to the Met bulletin. The cyclone along with the north-east monsoon, which became active in the State last week, will contribute to the rainfall, an official at the centre said. South interior Karnataka, in particular, has received copious rain during the southwest monsoon season (June to September).

According to the India Meteorological Department’s end-of-season report on the southwest monsoon, south interior Karnataka was the only meteorological zone in the country (of the total 36) to receive “excessive rainfall”. The region received 795 mm in the four southwest monsoon months, which is 20 per cent more rainfall than the long period average. Over the last 24 hours, parts of Karwar received a whopping 120 mm rainfall, Koppal 110 mm and Uttara Kannada 100 mm.
