Print MARAVANTHE (Udupi): A beautiful beach on one side and a river flowing silently on the other: the drive along NH-66 at Trasi, Maravanthe, in Udupi district, could be one of the most scenic in the country. There is an uncultivated beauty about it - the rhythmic sound of the Arabian Sea hitting the shore and the river Souparnika lapping lazily - the stretch is turning into a travel pit stop. Catering to the growing touristy crowds are beachside shacks, tender coconut vendors and some dhabas.
The high tourism potential of this place is apparent, but so is the fact that Swachh Bharat is not working here. The road is littered with tender coconut shells, cigarette butts and beer bottles. Plastic bags add to the misery. Sujay, a dhaba owner, said most people make a stopover here to enjoy its beauty and play on the beach. Sujay keeps his dhaba open till 11.30pm.Ganesh Karvi, who runs a petty shop, says since it is close to the Kollur Mookambika Temple, there are many visitors. Tender coco nuts are in high demand, as barring the rainy season, the place is warm. Truck drivers prefer to rest here too, points out Karvi.
Moves are now afoot to tap it as a tourism hotspot. Udupi deputy commissioner R Vishal said systematic development of the beach has been outsourced and work would be taken up shortly. Nagaraj, assistant director, tourism department, said, " A private agency will develop the beach, for which tenders have already been called. The department will take up fencing work first. High-mast lamps, drinking water facility, pathways and food courts will be developed soon. Later, water sports and parasailing will come up. As of now, an average of 2,000 people visit the beach every day ."
The Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited has been given Rs 2.4 crore to develop the beach, which will be protected, with security personnel deployed across the stretch.
