Fruit-seller who built school for his Mangaluru village gets house as gift

MANGALURU: "I never dreamt of living in a house worth Rs 15 lakh. Today , I’m very happy. I pray for the wellbeing of the donor who built a house for me," said 61-year-old Harekala Hajabba, popularly known as `Akshara Santa’ or ’Saint of Letters’. .
An unlettered Hajabba fought tirelessly to build a school at Newpadpu in Harekala, 20 km from here, by pooling in all his earnings and tapping donors.While chasing his school dream, he didn’t think of a house for his family of wife and three children.
A fruit-seller, Hajabba was worried about his family but never expressed it.The United Christian Association came forward to build a 760-sqft house for him. On Sunday, the house was inaugurated in the presence of Muslim cler gies, UCA president Alban Menezes, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and health minister UT Khader.
"I’m an ordinary man, and I haven’t kept a paise of my earnings. On September 13, 2004, there were no chairs in my house when four journalists came to talk to me about my struggle for a school in my village," said Hajabba.
Hajabba lived in a partially-damaged house with tiled roof. The new, concrete-roof house has two bedrooms.
UCA president Alban Menezes, a builder, said: "I learnt about Hajabba’s problems when he was admitted to hospital. Doctors said he was suffering from anxiety due to poverty . I felt sad seeing an achiever suffer like this. UCA members raised Rs 1.5 lakh and I contributed the rest. We’ll build a compound wall with gate for Rs 2 lakh."
Health minister Khader saw a robust example of communal harmony in this: A Christian association building a house for a Muslim philanthropist, who worked for the greater good. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel called Hajabba a role model who is doing the job of a government.
