BJP has no reason to celebrate, says Congress
Party tears apart Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship policies, Make in India and Smart City Mission.
At a time when the BJP celebrated its second year in power at the Centre, the rival Congress on Thursday confronted it over a range of issues — from foreign policy to economy to agrarian distress — and tore apart Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship policies, Make in India and Smart City Mission.
“These two years of the NDA government have seen tensions in all sections, farmers, traders, women, OBCs, SCs, STs, are all disenchanted with it,” said the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, at a press briefing.
‘Failing economy’
Mr. Azad said the economy is “failing” because of the exports taking a “persistent” dip and industrial production becoming stagnant.
“Rupee vis-à-vis Dollar is continuously sliding and corporate sales are down,” said Mr. Azad, adding that the Make in India programme has proven ineffective to generate jobs. “Babbar Sher [the lion logo of Make in India] has been mewing,” he said.
Though the party did not perform well in the recent elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal, Mr. Azad along with other senior leaders, Kapil Sibal, Mallikarjun Kharge and Randeep Singh Surjewala put up a cheerful face. They cracked jokes and recited poetry while taking a dig at the BJP government.
Mr. Azad criticised Mr. Modi’s foreign policy, wondering whether it was “the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, the Foreign Minister or the National Security Adviser” who had been “consistently inconsistent” toward China and Pakistan.
‘Left with nothing’
Quoting Persian poetry, Mr. Azad said the crux of Mr. Modi’s policy on China and Pakistan can be summed up as “they came and we also went, and we sat, we talked, we ate, and then we left [with nothing].”
Talking about corruption, he said last year’s Parliament session was washed out because of a series of scams —Vyapam, Lalit Modigate, Chhattisgarh PDS scam, Rajasthan mining scam and now Vijay Mallyagate — and the BJP government is yet to take any action on the issue.
He said the BJP’s only achievement was the creation of “social tensions” through its ministers and legislators, who made “provocative” statements and spread fear among the minorities and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Senior leader Kapil Sibal said the BJP had no reason to celebrate because it is yet to perform well.
Sensex marginally up
Invoking the Sensex of the time when Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister in 2004, Mr. Sibal said it was then at 8000 points and by the time Dr. Singh left, it was at 24,000.
“Today, the Sensex is at 25,600. Only 2 per cent increase and the value of rupee has fallen by 16 per cent. Is that any performance? Is that a reason to celebrate?”
Mr. Azad said the government was only engaged in repackaging and renaming in the garb of launching new schemes.
