Mumbai: Monorail passes another test

Print Amid several issues — including delayed deadlines, technical issues and huge losses — the monorail made a successful trial run to NM Joshi Marg, Lower Parel.
A successful trial run of the monorail was conducted on Friday afternoon, where the monorail crossed Lalbaug flyover and travelled up to NM Joshi Marg in Lower Parel.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed that the mono, which crossed the flyover and Currey Road station at 12.44 pm, will have more trials in the next few weeks.
"We will conduct further trials on NM Joshi Marg and Sane Guruji Road and once those trials are over, the Wadala-Saat Rasta section will be started,’’ said MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan.
The trial run was conducted at a precautionary speed of 15 to 20 kmph. Wary of a series of incidents that have been bogging Phase 1 of the monorail, an MMRDA official clarified that there were no problems encountered during the run.
Earlier in August, the MMRDA completed a trial run from Wadala to GTB Nagar. The first phase is between Chembur and Wadala Depot for 8.93 km. The second phase will cover a balance distance of 10.6 km.
The consortium of LTSE (Larsen & Toubro-Scomi Engineering), which is working on a major portion of the civil construction, is yet to carry out work till the Jacob Circle. Even the five monorail trains which are due to come from Scomi’s Malaysian manufacturing plant to Mumbai are yet to arrive.
According to the MMRDA, four trains are in working condition while two are being repaired.
The BJP government in the state wants Phase II of the monorail project to open before the civic polls. The current deadline set for this is December, this year.
