Print Unscientific planning, apathy plague Brahmavar bus stand
UDUPI: Brahmavar, a place with the potential to become a taluk in the near future, is considered the fastest-growing town in the district. In normal circumstances, when the transportation facility at a place improves, it develops rapidly. However, the Brahmavar bus stand has proved this theory wrong - a bus from Udupi entering this stand takes at least 10 minutes.
The bus stand is 14km from Udupi. More than 200 local and service buses come here every day. Passengers travel daily to Barkur, Kundapur Thirthahalli, Pethri Hebri and other places from this bus stand. Buses which start from Udupi have to go though NH 66 to SMS College stop, take a turn to the service road to reach Brahmavar main stand. They have to take a U-turn to the stand and get back to the service road again, cross NH 66 to go to Akashwani. The process is too long at Brahmavar bus stand, which is located in a very small and congested place.
Anitha Poojari, a resident of the area said, "At night, buses do not enter the bus stand and instead stop at the service road. Express service buses stop on the National Highway and cause congestion. Though people have brought this issue to the notice of traffic authorities, the problem remains. The four-lane work of NH 66 passes through Udupi district and links Mangaluru, Suratkal and Kundapur. Cattle on the highway added to our woes."
Krishna Shetty of Brahmavar said, "The roads here are laid unscientifically. Locals have no idea how to set it right. The bus stand has two hospitals near it and the high-decibel horns disturb patients there. There is also a government high school and these buses cause sound pollution and disturb the students. There is a Karnataka Electricity Board office, BSNL and post offices where people come to pay their bills. We need a solution soon to this problem."
