Sasikala, nephew perform last rites

Tamil Nadu came to a standstill on Tuesday as a sea of humanity surged to pay its last respects to chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The popular leader was declared dead at Apollo Hospitals around midnight on Monday. Her body was then taken to her Poes Garden residence.

After ceremonial rites, her body was shifted to Rajaji Hall, draped in the tricolour, to enable people to get a last glimpse. She was buried at Marina Beach, next to the memorial of her mentor M G Ramachandran (MGR). Jayalalithaa and MGR were a popular pair in Tamil cinema before he entered politics and rose to become Tamil Nadu chief minister.

Watch, bangle intactJayalalithaa’s favourite watch remained on her left wrist and a bangle adorned her right as a flower-bedecked military truck carrying her body traversed Chennai’s main streets.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister for Information M Venkaiah Naidu, chief ministers Siddaramaiah (Karnataka), Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) and Naveen Patnaik (Odisha) and actor Rajinikanth were among the VIPs who paid their respects. Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala and her family members flanked the body. Curiously, Panneerselvam, a staunch Jayalalithaa loyalist, was not seen near the body.

“Amma yenna vittutu poyitteye,” (Mother, you have abandoned me), wailed a woman AIADMK member, running behind the funeral procession. Thousands of party workers were screaming and beating themselves in grief. The procession took an hour and a half to move from Rajaji Hall, where the body lay in state for 10 hours, to Marina Beach through Wallajah Road.

Buried next to MGRA burial space, identical to the one allotted to MGR, was provided for her. Sasikala and Jayalalithaa’s nephew Deepak (elder brother Jayakumar’s son) performed the last rites. Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Pon Radhakrishnan also participated in the rituals on behalf of the Centre.

Anguished mourners gazed at Jayalalithaa’s face one last time as the sandalwood casket closed her out for ever. The 68-year-old Jayalalithaa died at 11.30 pm on Monday, a day after she had suffered a cardiac arrest. She had been in hospital since September 22, when she was admitted for fever and dehydration.

After paying homage, Modi walked up to Sasikala and new Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and expressed his condolences. Panneerselvam had taken oath hours before, in the early hours of Tuesday. Opposition DMK treasurer M K Stalin and his sister M Kanimozhi, MP, also paid their last respects.

Burial raises eyebrows

EMOTIONAL FAREWELL: A sea of people take part in the funeral procession in Chennai on Tuesday.
As Sasikala and Jayalalithaa’s nephew Deepak went around placing pieces of sandalwood in the coffin bearing her mortal remains, eyebrows were raised as it became clear the departed leader would be buried.

In the past, several Dravidian movement leaders like Periyar and MGR – Jayalalithaa’s mentor – have been buried so that the leaders could be remembered by the followers through their memorials.

The Dravidian movement or the self-respect movement is anti-brahmin in nature and is severly opposed to the varna system and caste-based oppression. The leaders of this movement are atheists.

But Jayalalithaa never hid her piety and adoration for deities at Guruvayoor and Chamundi Hills, and neither did she shy away from sporting a small namam, the caste mark of iyengars.

A senior AIADMK leader told DH Jayalalithaa was beyond caste and religion. “Burial was the choice as we want to raise a big memorial for our Amma,” he said.

An inconsolable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam hugged Narendra Modi emotionally on a couple of occasions as the Prime Minister approached the casket containing Jayalalithaa’s body to pay his last respects.

The atmosphere was surcharged as Modi, amid tight security, walked into Rajaji Hall, where the AIADMK supremo’s body is lying in state.

As he walked towards Panneerselvam after placing a wreath near the body, the latter broke down and hugged him. Modi affectionately patted him, suggesting that he be strong.

As Modi walked back to his vehicle, Panneerselvam again hugged him with tears in his eyes.

Earlier, the Prime Minister consoled Jayalalithaa’s close confidante Sasikala, who was crying.

Even at that time, Panneerselvam again broke down and the Prime Minister hugged him, asking him to control his emotions.

A huge posse of security personnel, including black cat commandos, were on alert as the Prime Minister passed through the huge crowd that had converged at the Rajaji Hall.

Modi was also seen requesting people not to take photos on their mobile phones as he greeted them with folded hands.
