Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s visit raises hackles in Mangaluru; common man suffers
Even as Mangaluru City Police on Friday kept maintaining “#nobandhtomorrow” and posted tweets that schools and colleges will function as usual and buses too will ply, the scene was different on Saturday. Private buses stayed off the roads, the turnout in schools was poor and shops remained closed, except for chemists, milk booths and a few hotels. On the whole, the bandh-like situation prevailed with a few incidents of stone-pelting on buses. This, despite the city police sending a strong message that action would be taken against those who force people to observe bandhs. However, private vehicles like cars and two-wheelers were seen as usual.
Right-wing organisations had opposed the visit of Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to Mangaluru to participate in the harmony rally of CPI(M). The Mangaluru City Police and the Dakshina Kannda district police had taken all precautions to prevent untoward incidents.
However, the biggest sufferers of Saturday’s bandh were PUC students. For science students, the maths paper was scheduled. Students reached exam centres late and staff were forced to give them extra time. For many, parents dropped them to college while those from far off places had to depend on government buses only.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Dr Prabha Kamath, Principal, Canara PU College, said out of the 800 students who appeared for the Maths (Science) and basic Maths (commerce) exams, six students were absent. About 10 students entered the classroom late and they were given extra time to complete their papers. Two invigilators staying in rural Surathkal area could not make it to the college either. However, we managed with other staff. Regarding those who were absent, it is upto the Deputy Director of the PU Board to take a decision,” she said.
Shashank, a student, said, “There was a lot of uncertainty as to whether the examinations will be conducted. This definitely affected our last-minute preparations,” he said. Waheeda, a student from St Ann’s PU College, said all students attended the exams, except for a few who were late. With no private buses in operation, students who stayed far away from college suffered the most.
“For a change, it is also nice to see our parents waiting for us eargerly outside the examination hall, wondering how we wrote our papers,” said another student.
