A beloved Catholic priest is recovering in hospital after a man pulled out a knife and stabbed the 48-year-old in front of shocked worshippers in Melbourne, Australia.
Reverend Tomy Mathew was about to begin the 11am Italian mass at St Matthew’s Catholic Church on Sunday when the man approached with what was believed to be a kitchen knife.
"You can imagine our shock," said one long-time volunteer at the parish, located in William St in Fawkner, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
A priest from Kerala, Fr. Tomy Kalathoor Mathew was stabbed in a suspected case of racist attack in a Melbourne church.
The priest, who was stabbed in the neck, is however recovering well.
According to reports, a man armed with a knife approached the priest in the St. Mathew’s Parish in North Fawkner, moments before the 11 am mass on Sunday. The offender told the priest that because he was Indian, he must be a Hindu or a Muslim and therefore can’t be saying mass.
"We understand what has happened today has been shocking to our parish community. Fr Tomy would like to say that he is recovering well and is in good spirits. His first thoughts have been for the parishioners and the school community. To all of you, thank you so much for your prayers and thoughts," a message on the parish’s Facebook page said.
"Fr.Tomy is recovering well and is in good spirits. His injuries are non-life threatening. He is still in hospital for the moment," said one Adrian, who replied to Mirror’s message on Facebook.
"We hope the offender will be caught soon," he further said.
Fr. Tomy took over as parish priest of St. Mathew’s Parish in August 2014. Prior to that, he was at St. Francis de Sales, Oak Park, .
