The 22-year old techie, S. Nikhil Reddy who has undergone surgery to gain height by few inches in the month of May last year has gained one and a half inch of height but will have to wait for one more year to lead a normal life. It was in March 2017 that a team of four Doctors led by Dr Bujji Babu of Global Hospitals removed the rods from both the legs allowing him to take few steps with the help of a walker.

“After that, I was advised not to walk for a month and then to take small walks with the help of walker every ten minutes. The pain receded but there was swelling due to blood clots last month. After a course of antibiotics now for the first time during the past one year I am not taking any medication,” Nikhil said. Nikhil who was 5 feet 7 inches before the surgery now measures 5 feet 8.5 inches.

The team of doctors who were appointed by the Telangana Medical Council have confirmed that only 75 % of the right leg and 95% of the left leg got healed making him unfit to walk without the help of any walker. “As the gap between the bones is healing slowly than the doctors promised I have started taking up work sitting at home. I will be able to get out of the confines of the house and go to work like everyone one only next year,” Nikhil who has to quit his software job due to the height increasing surgery said.

Alleging indifference by the government in initiating action against the hospital which has resorted to the surgery, Nikhil’s father S Govardhan Reddy, and a realtor said that the government medical and health department is delaying in sending its report to the Central Crime Station (CCS) which was entrusted with the enquiry of the incident. “The the file from CCS is laying the table of DR Ramani the director of Medical and Health for three months. We are planning to organize a dharna in front of her office if the department fails to respond,” Govardhan Reddy said.

Hoping to become taller overnight Nikhil underwent surgery at Global hospital in Lakdikapul on 5 April 2016 without informing his parents. Orthopaedic and knee replacement specialist Dr Chandrabhushan has cut his bones and inserted rods to increase height. The doctor, who has assured Nikhil that he can start walking within a month and can even play football, has been kept away from treating Nikhil following public outcry.
