Second edition of Indian Open of Surfing begins.
With all preparations in place, Sasihithlu beach wears a new look
Unloading rucksacks, applying a coat of sunscreen on body, polishing the board with a coat of foam and tightening the loose ends of the surfboard have become a common scene since last two days at Sasihithlu beach near Haleangadi, as the coast is getting ready to host its second edition of Indian Open of Surfing 2017, beginning Friday.
With already 150 surfing enthusiasts from different parts of the country enrolling their names online, it has scaled popularity, evident with 40 more entries this time. In all, 110 surfers had taken part in its maiden edition in 2016,  Yathish Bykampady, a chief executive officer of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project, who is also involved in organising the event, said.
Apart from local talents representing Mantra, Stoked and other surfing clubs, young surfing enthusiasts from Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry have arrived in hordes. A 15-member team from Salty Bone Divers arrived on Thursday morning, while equal number of surfers are expected in the second batch later, said its team leader Manimaran.
No sooner they landed at the beach, they started to unpack, handpicking boards different in sizes. Manimaran said leash and fins form an integral part of the board, with fins fitted in the rear and bottom part of the board helping in manoeuvring, while leash is tied to ankle; either right or left depending on the surfers choice.
Whenever a surfer loses control and goes adrift, it is only with the help of leash, he or she stays connected with the board, Karunya, another surfer who is eagerly waiting to debut in the surfing, said.
Health tips
Dylan from Kalliallay from Auroville, Pondicherry, said it is equally important to take precautionary measures with skin, as the chances of allergy are high when one gets into water. He said he is not participating in the contest this time, as he has been tasked with the job of jury this year.
Arrangements
The district administration, which is leaving no stone unturned, has made all preparations in this regard.
Free food and accommodation have been made at National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Karnataka campus. Temporary environmental-friendly toilets (e-toilets)have come up at the venue, while food courts are being set up, apart from permanent stalls. Waste bins, all coloured green, have been in placed to check littering.
The weeds and shrubs have been cleared to ensure sufficient space to park vehicles. Most importantly, the road to beach off the highway is neatly laid, making it a smooth ride. Bollywood star Suneil Shetty, also a Mangalurean, is expected to grace the occasion as ambassador, along with former cricketer Jonty Rhodes.
Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge will inaugurate the surfing season at 10 am in the presence of District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, Medium and Large Scale Industries Minister R V Deshpande and Moodbidri MLA K Abhayachandra Jain.
