Metro till midnight, BMTC to link last mile - Metro connects south today
The southern neighbourhoods of Bengaluru are excited: they are finally connected by Namma Metro.
President Pranab Mukherjee will flag off a train to Yelachenahalli on Saturday, and mark the completion of Phase 1.
The entire Phase 1 will be open to public from 4 pm on Sunday, allowing seamless connectivity among four different corners of the city.
Now, a stroll through Lalbagh and Cubbon Park or a visit to the Banashankari temple need not be a weekend affair for people from other parts of the city as, for the first time, they can plan every minute of their trip. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has finally tackled the 4-km underground section between National College and Sampige Road, its biggest bottleneck, which prevented the metro from connecting some of the oldest parts of Kempegowda’s Bengaluru.
BMRCL Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola said the stretch, especially near KR Market and Chickpet stations, had become the biggest bottlenecks.
“The geographic conditions were challenging. We encountered several problems, including the breakdown of the tunnel boring machine, which delayed the work. But our engineers worked day and night to reach this day,” he said.
Traffic diversions on account of President’s visit
The traffic police will impose the following restrictions in view of the movement of President Pranab Mukherjee and his convoy in the city on Saturday. Restrictions on vehicle parking on the following roads:

Namma Metro: As Phase 1 opens today, BMRCL enhances services to handle rush
BMRCL has extended the timings for North-South and East-West corridors with the first service beginning at 5 am and the last train departing at around 11 pm while BMTC is preparing to bridge the last-mile gap.
Those in the Majestic area can board a train to the four corners served by Metro at 11.25 pm.
“The first train from terminal stations — Baiyappanahalli, Mysuru Road, Nagasandra and Yelachenahalli — will start at 5 am. Passengers should note that the speed of these initial trains will be slow as they are pilot trains,” the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated in a release on Friday.
Though the North-South line is set to be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday, commercial services will begin only at 4 pm.
The last train from Baiyappanahalli and Yelachenahalli will depart at 11 pm. It will be 11.05 pm for Mysuru Road and 10.50 pm for Nagasandra.
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is not only deploying additional buses for feeder service, but is also extending its operations to meet the commuters’ demand for last mile connectivity.
BMTC Managing Director Ekroop Caur said, “About 120 buses will be deployed for feeder services. The number of buses and routes can be increased after assessing the commuters’ demand.”
The BMTC already runs more than 85 buses to metro stations. These buses not only connect to the far-off corners of the city, but also the major bus stations.
Officials are also conducting surveys to understand the travel pattern. “Feeder service is a continuously evolving process. As metro ridership increases, we will get to know which station is getting more people and deploy buses accordingly,” they added.
