CM admonishes top police officers for not checking communal flare-up in DK
Directs officers to book rowdy-sheeters and habitual offenders under Goonda Act
Blaming the police for not preventing communal flare-up at Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday pulled up jurisdictional police officials for their failure to take stringent action against those disturbing peace and harmony in the region.
Western Range IGP P. Harishekaran came under much criticism for the way the protests were handled, said sources, who attended a closed-door meeting of IPS officers with the Chief Minister to review the law and order situation in the State.
Sources said that an upset Mr. Siddaramaiah told the officials repeatedly that inaction by the police allowed communal forces to act following the murder of RSS activist Sharath Madiwala. He took to task Mr. Harishekaran and Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Reddy for allowing protests by BJP MPs and MLAs and RSS leaders, sources said.
Mr. Siddaramaiah is also learnt to have asked why Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik was not arrested, despite having a case of disrupting social harmony registered against him at the High Grounds police station in Bengaluru.
‘Take strict action’
Reminding top police officers about the forthcoming State Assembly elections, Mr. Siddaramaiah is learnt to have told IPS officers that a few communal forces were trying to disturb law and order for their own benefit. “This has to end”, the Chief Minister remarked.
He directed senior police officers to book rowdy-sheeters and habitual offenders in the coastal region under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA) and Goonda Act, to curb violence. Sources said that the Chief Minister had directed the top brass to act against perpetrators of violence irrespective of their affiliation. “The police have been directed to take action against Sri Ram Sene, Bajrang Dal, RSS, PFI, and SDPI leaders for their anti-social activities,” the sources added.
Meanwhile, a police team raided the house of Satyajit Surathkal, State secretary, BJP Backward Class Morcha, at Surathkal on Sunday night, but returned without finding him. He is associated with the Hindu Jagarana Vedike and wanted by the police in a stone-pelting case registered against him. So far, the police have arrested 13 persons in connection with stone-pelting and unlawful assembly at B.C. Road during the funeral procession of the RSS activist.
The police have already registered a case against 14 persons, including four right-wing leaders, in connection with unlawful assembly and stone-pelting.
Meanwhile, Dakshina Kannada in charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai said a meeting of elected representatives would be held in the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Mangaluru on July 13, to seek cooperation of all to restore peace. Representatives from all parties will be invited.
