Karavali: 336 schools damaged
Mangaluru: The torrential rain that poured down on Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts and along Karavali since the first week of August and the resulting floods has damaged a total of 336 schools.
There are altogether 1,816 schools in Karavali. Zonal education officers have collected reports from the authorities of respective schools regarding the estimated damage incurred due to the rains and submitted the same to the district education officer. The process of submitting the report to government by the deputy commissioners is in progress. Although there was damage, it did not hinder classes. Hence, classes are being conducted as per usual. Only at some schools, the classes have been shifted from the damaged room to another room.
Highest in DK district
In comparison to Udupi district, more schools have suffered damage in DK district. Altogether, 221 schools in the district have been damaged spread across 7 zones in the district. As per the statistics given by the area education officers of the zones, the highest damage has been incurred in Bantwal taluk. Altogether 25 schools in Mangaluru south zone including 19 primary schools and 6 high schools, a total of 19 schools in Mangaluru north zone including 16 primary and 3 high schools, 31 schools on Belthangady zone, a total of 81 schools in Bantwal zone including 68 primary and 13 high schools, a total of 40 schools in Puttur and Kadaba taluks including 38 primary and 2 high schools and a total of 25 schools in Sullia taluk including 23 primary and 2 high schools have been damaged.
There are 5 zones in Udupi district in which 115 schools have been damaged. According to the statistics given by the area education officers of the zones, altogether 12 schools in Udupi including 9 primary and 3 high schools, a total of 20 schools from Kundapur and half area of Byndoor zones combined, 8 schools in Brahmavar including 7 primary and 1 high school, 21 schools in Karkala including 20 primary and 1 high school and a total of 54 schools in Byndoor (plus half area of Kundapur) including 51 primary and 3 high schools have been damaged.
Classes as per usual
The incessant rain and flood has damaged more than 220 schools in DK district, but classes are nonetheless being conducted as per usual. Presently, no school is in immediate danger. The work on estimation of the damage incurred is in progress – Y Shivaramayya, DDPI, DK
Report for state government
The DDPI has already submitted the report regarding the damage incurred by the schools in the district because of the heavy rain and flood. This report has been forwarded to the state government – Sasikanth Senthil, Deputy Commissioner, DK
