Manipal, November 18:  Kasturba Medical College, Manipal is organizing a SAFE Operating Room (OR) course designed jointly byAssociation of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI), Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England), Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), Lifebox Foundation and World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).

KMC Manipal hopes to play a lead roll of SAFE OR across India. The Department of Anaesthesiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal along with the very experienced members of the steering committee from the UK areorganising this course which began here on Mondayat the Simulation Centre, Manipal Health Sciences Library Building, Manipal.

The course was inaugurated today by Dr H Vinod Bhat, Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. Dr Sharath Rao, Dean, KMC, Manipal welcomed the gathering. Dr Anitha Shenoy Professor of Anaesthesiology gave an overview of the course. In his inaugural address, Dr Bhat referred to the ‘lollipop lady/man’, who is a traffic management volunteer, stationed on busy roads, to aid school children safely cross the road.

Someone in the operating room team should take the role of a team leader and ensure a patient goes through the operating room safely. The ProChancellor, Dr HS Ballal presided over the function. He mentioned that every team member is important, be it a surgeon, anaesthetist, nurse or anaesthesia technician and must take collective responsibility of the safety of the patient.

Dr Poornima Baliga and Dr PLNG Rao, ProVice Chancellors, Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal were also present. Dr Isabeau Walker, Consultant Anaesthetist from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London and the Lead for SAFE OR course, Dr Tei Sheraton, the Course co-ordinator along with other experienced surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses who have arrived as course instructors were felicitated.Dr Manjunath Prabhu, Professor and Head of Anaesthesiology proposed the vote of thanks.

About 40 delegates consisting of anaesthetists, surgeons, nurses, technicians from four constituent hospitals of MAHE KMC, Manipal, KMC, Mangalore, Dr TMA Pai Hospital Udupi and Dr TMA Pai Rotary Hospital Karkala will be trained in this first course. Selected local faculty will also be trained to conduct such courses in the future to train professionals working in the operating room.
