Policeman’s hand chopped off in attack by ’Nihangis’ in Punjab

A policeman’s hand was chopped off and other police officials were injured when a group of people allegedly attacked them in Punjab’s Patiala district on Sunday, police said. A group of four-five ’Nihangs’ (Sikhs armed with traditional weapons and dressed in loose blue top) were travelling in a vehicle and they were asked to stop at a vegetable market at around 6.15 am by the Mandi board officials, they said.

Over 22,000 Healthcare Workers Infected By COVID-19: WHO

Geneva: The COVID-19 pandemic has hit over 22,000 healthcare workers across 52 countries and regions, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. According to its daily situation report on Saturday, 22,073 COVID-19 cases among healthcare workers have been reported to the WHO as of Wednesday, April 8, Xinhua news agency reported. The report said the number is probably under-represented as there is so far no systematic reporting of infections among healthcare workers to the WHO.

 US COVID-19 deaths top 20,000

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the United States topped 20,000, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. A total of 20,071 people have died of the disease among 519,453 confirmed cases in the country as of 4 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) on Saturday, the CSSE said, reported Xinhua news agency. New York state has recorded the most deaths in the country, 8,627, which is followed by New Jersey and Michigan with 2,183 and 1,276, respectively. A total of 29,507 patients in the country have recovered, according to the CSSE.

Jaipur on Saturday recorded 80 new cases of coronavirus, taking the city’s total count to 301 even as the positive cases in the desert state rose to 700. Death of third patient in the state capital took the death toll in Rajasthan to nine.

Meanwhile, out of 80 cases recorded in Jaipur on Saturday, 79 cases are from Ramganj while one is from C-Scheme, Jaipur. 20 new cases were found in Tonk, 14 in Kota, 13 in Banswara, six in Bikaner, two in Jhalawar and one positive each in Alwar, Dausa, Jaisalmer and Karauli.

As many 62.5 per cent people across various groups -- social, income, age, education, religion and gender -- said they have ration/medicine etc. or money for the same for less than three weeks, according to the IANS C-Voter Covid Tracker’s Index of Panic.

A total of 37.5 per cent of people said they are prepared for these essentials for more than three weeks. This data gains significance as the country is moving closer to the end of the 21-day lockdown to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, and a consensus is building among state governments to extend the lockdown for two more weeks.

BREAKING | After Mahashtra and West Bengal, Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday announced an extension of lockdown in his state till April 30. Till now, 503 positive cases have been reported in the state, of which 393 are active cases and 96 have been discharged. 14 deaths reported till date.
The Delhi Congress on Saturday fed labourers and the Yamuna Khadar area’s farmers under the ’Congress Ke Rasoi -- Aao Haath Badhaye’ programme at 105 places in 14 districts of the city and distributed ration at 43 places.

Speaking to reporters, Delhi Congress chief Chaudhary Anil Kumar alleged that the cooked food distributed by the AAP government was of low quality.
As many as 58 people tested coronavirus positive in Tamil Nadu in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 969. Death of a person in Erode raised the Covid-19 toll to 10.

Kerala reports 10 new Covid-19 cases, tally rises to 228

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday informed that 10 new positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the state, taking the total number of affected to 228.

Today there are 1,22,676 people under observation at homes and 814 at various hospitals in the state. Two deaths had been reported previously in the state, but those patients had other serious underlying ailments.

BREAKING | Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government on Saturday announced extension of lockdown in the state as positive Coronavirus cases cross 1,500-mark. The decision comes soon after PM Modi held an all-CM video conferencing meet to decided the further course of action to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Maharashtra will continue to be locked down till 30th April. The state will show the way to the country even in these tough times, Maharashtra CM said.

DMK President M.K. Stalin on Saturday urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami not to delay the decision on extending the lockdown period to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state.

He also said the ’one nation, one corona and one procurement’ policy should be avoided as it delays the measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Demanding adequate protective equipment for the medical professionals treating Covid-19 patients, Stalin also said the government should give a special assistance of Rs 5,000 to the poor and also rice, oil, pulses and other essential items free of cost.
