‘Clean up your bicycles’: Akshay Kumar’s old tweet on fuel prices goes viral
Not just Akshay Kumar, many celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher too tweeted about the price hikes in 2012
Mumbai: Incessant rise in fuel prices has become a major concern for the common people across the country, as the prices have already crossed Rs 100 per litre in Rajasthan. Amid all this, an old tweet of Akshay Kumar where he cared and spoke about skyrocketing prices of fuel is going viral on social media.
The old tweet dates back to 2012 where Akshay Kumar had raised his voice about the soaring fuel prices. On 27 February 2012, the actor had tweeted, “Guys, I think it’s time to clean up your bicycles and hit the road! As per sources, expecting another petrol price hike.”
He, however, deleted the tweet later for which he received massive wrath from the netizens. Screenshot of the ‘now unavailable’ tweet is doing rounds on the internet and many Twitter users are calling out the actor for his ‘selective silence’ on social media when it comes to issues that affected the common man.
Another tweet of Akshay Kumar from May 2011 too is being circulated on social media where he said, “Couldn’t even get to my house at nite for all of Mumbai was queuing up for #petrol before the prices rocketed again.” He, however, did not delete the tweet and is now being retweeted by many social media users.
Not just Akshay Kumar, many celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher too tweeted about the price hikes in 2012. Both the actors let their humour shine, in 2012, when they spoke about the fuel price hike and shared jokes about the same on Twitter.
Hon @PMOIndia @narendramodi you must listen to @akshaykumar @AnupamPKher @vivekagnihotri @SrBachchan they are afraid to talk so sharing their tweet
Mr Amitabh was going to burn his car when petrol was only 75₹ by now all his cars must be burnt! Make @Swamy39 FM & control prices.
And now, many social media users are questioning celebrities for keeping mum or just cracking a harmless joke on the fuel price hike.

Petrol at ₹100 | Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole threatens to stall films of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar
Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole says the common man has been affected a lot by the increase in prices of petrol and diesel
Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole on February 18 said if actors Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar do not take a stand on the issue of fuel price hike, then screening of their films and shootings would not be allowed in the State.
Talking to reporters here, Mr. Patole said Bachchan and Kumar had tweeted about fuel price rise during the previous UPA government, but are now silent on the issue.
The prices of branded or additive-laced petrol, which attracts higher taxes, have crossed the ₹100-mark in some places, including Maharashtra. In Mumbai, petrol is now costing ₹96.32 a litre and diesel ₹87.32.
Mr. Patole said the common man has been affected a lot by the increase in prices of petrol and diesel.
Filmstars like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Mr. Akshay Kumar, through their tweets, had earlier criticised the fuel price rise during the Manmohan Singh-led government, he said.
Why are they silent now on the rising petrol and diesel prices? he asked.
“If they do not take a stand now on the injustice meted out by the Modi government, we will not let any films [screening] or shootings of Amitabh Bachchan or Akshay Kumar in Maharashtra,” the Congress leader said.
They should now play the same role and protest against the Central government’s “anti-national policy”, as they did during Manmohan Singh’s tenure, Mr. Patole said.
He also criticised the BJP-led Central government on the FASTag system for vehicles.
The Centre had made FASTags mandatory from February 15 midnight and said any vehicle not fitted with it will be charged double the toll at electronic toll plazas across the country.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways clarified that this has been done to further promote fee payment through digital mode, reduce waiting time and fuel consumption, and provide for a seamless passage through the fee plazas.
