Ironically, it was the monstrous earth movers used for mining in the district that inspired him. But this machine is environment-friendly

There seems to be a silver lining to the gloomy mining story of Bellary. The monstrous earth movers which ate away the district’s ecology inspired R Somashekhara Reddy, a third-year diploma student from SES Polytechnic in Siruguppa taluk of Bellary district, to design a prototype of an earth mover powered by water.

Reddy explains, “Earth movers are not only used for mining but also for agricultural purposes. Hire charges for an earth mover range between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000 per hour and most farmers cannot afford them. Hence, I came up with the idea of an earth mover which runs on water, can do minor farm work and is cheap.”

Reddy knew what he was getting into because of his hands-on experience in operating a hydraulic earth mover. He replaced the oil tank in a hydraulic earth mover with a compression water tank. He explains how his prototype works: Only three-fourth of the tank is filled with water and the remaining space by compressed air. Using a compression valve and other control systems, pressure can be exerted to push water from the tank in the required direction to execute a task — either excavation or lifting. Depending on the amount of work to be done, you can either have a small or large tank. Though water is not as viscous as oil and cannot be used to do herculean tasks, the water earth mover can work like a hydraulic machine with lesser work loads.

However, the machine requires diesel to move from one place to another.

Talking about the advantages of his earth mover, Reddy says, “As per global standards, hydraulic machines have a work pressure of 350 bars. This machine powered with water can exert a work pressure ranging from 100 bars to 120 bars and can accomplish 10 people’s task in lesser time. In a hydraulic earth mover, oil used once cannot reused. But water can be used for other purposes as well.”

Reddy first used rubber tubes but the increased elasticity of these tubes was a setback. He then replaced them with synthetic rubber.

Reddy requires about a day to assemble his machine with the help of disposable syringe tubes which hold water. He hopes that an automobile manufacturer will take his prototype further and come up with an actual version of a water earth mover to help farmers.
