Udupi ; The Swatch Bharat Movement seems good development in the country and role and contribution of women for the Swatch Bharat Movement apapreciated.The Swatch Bharath Movement launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at achieving a clean and open defecation free India prior to the celebration of 150^th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji on 2^nd October, 2019, said Ramesh Jigajinagi, Union Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation.

He was speaking on inauguration of district level International Women’s Day and valedictory ceremony of Swatch Shakti Saptah was held at the Town Hall, Ajjarkad here on Wednesday, 8^th March, 2017. The programme was organized by District Administration, Women and Children Development Department, Zilla Panchayat, District Women Association’s Okkoota, District Shtree Shakthi Okkoota and Lions Club Parkala.

He said that after the Swatch Bharat movement all over the country 3.50 crore individual lavatories established. The sanitation coverage in the country reached 61.27 %. In the state 64% sanitation facilities were provided. Upto now 5,45,987 lavataries individually and 53 community sanitations were provided.

The centre has released Rs. 10,500 crore for the Swatch Bharat Movement and out of that Rs 419.56 crore provided to Karnataka state to build individual lavatories and the state has asked Rs. 253.43 crore and state has spend Rs 240 crore to the construction of toilets. Around 27 taluks and five districts – Udupi, Bengaluru, Bengaluru rural, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada have been declared free of open defecation, he said.

Various women achievers were honoured on the occasion for the outstanding performance in women empowerment and promoting open defection free work in the district.

Udupi Zilla Panchayat Vice President Sheela K Shetty presided over the programme. Priyanka Mary Francis Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district, Taluk Panchyat President Nalini Pradeep Rao, ZP members Gitanjali Suvarna, Shilpa Suvarna, Sudhakar Shetty, Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director Gracy Gonsalves, Sarala Kanchan, Vasanthi Radha Das, Dhanalaxmi, Radhakrishna Mendon were present.

Srinivas Rao of ZP official welcomed the gatherings. Dr. Roshan Kumar Shetty of Youth and Sports department compered the programme.
