Doha: The Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), one of the oldest socio-cultural organizations of the expatriate Indian community in the State of Qatar, is gearing up for the much-awaited, mega and the first  Gulf International Baila dance contest finale that is scheduled to be held on Friday April 28 evening at the sprawling Regency Halls here. The gala event is being held as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of MCC, the identity of Mangaloreans working and residing in the oil-rich country of Qatar.

In 1992, love for the game of cricket brought some enthusiastic youngsters from and around Mangalore together in Qatar. Under the banner of MCC later many inspired senior members of the Managalorean community along with their families joined MCC and developed it into a multifaceted purposeful organization which has won trophies be it in cricket, throwball, Kabaddi or KhoKho and is even organizing volleyball and throwball tournaments which are open to all communities and nationalities. Over the years, it has also successfully organized various cultural, educational, social and sports events for the benefit of the community in Qatar.

Expertise and experience in organizing mega events has always been the hallmark of MCC. It is this expertise and experience that played a major role in conceiving and putting together an inter-gulf dance competition. “Gulf Baila Naach” is a Baila dance competition on Konkani songs open to all Konkani speaking people of Mangalorean origin, residing in the GCC countries of Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, holding a valid GCC visa. This contest is a platform to showcase the dancing talents of Mangaloreans working and living in the GCC countries.

MCC joined hands with like-minded organizations from other GCC countries to stage this dancing extravaganza. Preliminary rounds have already been held in each of the participating countries and the best dancing ‘zoddem’ (pair) has been selected to represent their country in the finals to be held in Qatar. Winners will be conferred with the title, “‘Baila Zoddem”, and the male will also be crowned as ‘Baila King’ while female will be crowned as ‘Baila Queen’ and will receive prize money of Rs 1 lac . The first and the second runners-up will take home Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.   The organization of the winning couple nation will receive a “Baila Nation” title with trophy.
