Udupi : The District Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis warned that licenses of stone quarries being operated in the district will be cancelled if they fail to erect fences around the quarries with 15 days. She gave warning in the wake of tragedy at Padu Alevoor recently where a mother and a child drowned in a quarry pond.

She was addressing a meeting of officials of various departments and representatives of voluntary organizations held in the deputy commissioner’s office at Rajathadhri ,Manipal on Wednesday, 26^th April, 32017.

She also directed officials of Karnataka Infrastructure Development Ltd to conduct a survey of quarries that are operating in the district without holding a valid license and also asked the officials to file compliance report within two days.

But now some stone quarries are closed and even now also the owners of stone quarries still not erected fences around the quarries. She ordered officials of mines and geology department to cancel the licenses issued to such quarries if the owners fail to erect fences around within 15 days.

Priyanka Mary Francis also told all the gram panchayat’s PDO’s  to identify stone quarries, water bodies and dangerous pits located by roadside, display warning boards at these spots and send a report within seven days.

During the meeting the issue of creating a workforce at gram panchayat level in the district in relation to protection of children. She told to the officials of Women and Child Department to take necessary steps to make children’s helpline operational in the district as soon as possible.

The sale of illegal liquor at places at Kerady, Golihole, Haklady and other remote villages of Kundapur taluk also briefed during the meeting. In response this complaint DC said that the department will take suitable action if proper details are furnished and she also assured that names of the complainants will be kept secret.

During the meeting Shilpa Nag, Assistant Commissioner at Kundapur Subdivision, G. Anuradha, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Various departments officials and representatives of various voluntary organizations were present.
