Udupi : The threat posed by global warming and climate change cannot be ignored. It was the responsibility of every citizen along with the government to protect forest, said Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests and Environment, Government of Karnataka.

He was speaking after inaugurating a vanamohtsava programme under the “Forests for Water” campaign which organized by Department of Forests, Kundapura Zone, district administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Legal Services Authority, Udupi and State Pollution Control Board at Rajathadri, DC office premises, Manipal on Monday, 24th July, 2017.

Prior to the programme, Ramanath Rai inspected the guard of honor to him by the forest guards. Pramod Madhwaraj District in-charge Minister was inaugurated the Parishara Jatha vehicle in front of DC office.

In his inaugural address Ramanath Rai said that most of the NGO’s and various social assositions are supporting the government for the Vana Samvardhana programme in all the district in the state with planting of saplings and increasing green cover. He said that water is the main source for the human being and livings. We have 65% water in our body. More than 85% water is present in our lungs. This year upto now minus seven percent rainfall shortage in Udupi district while about minus 17% rainfall in interior part of Karnataka. In order to shortage of water, there is every person responsibility to preserve the water as well as the forests. So we should keep forests for the rainfall which main tool to get the rainfall. The celebrations of vanamahotsava should not be token one, but we to get result from these celebrations.

The Dharmasthala Rural Development Project was also helping the government with its recently launched Vana Samvardhna programme. The government officials should give priority to digging of percolation pits and planting of saplings under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act scheme.

We are pride to say that the Karnataka state was leading the country in having the largest population of tigers, elephants, leopards and monkeys. We should give respect on the issue of growth of forests. The corporate world has providing aid and support to the growth of forest which is giving power for the forest department. We should get salvation through planting the saplings, keeping alive the saplings and to survive the forests. The government is providing aid to those who are planting saplings Rs. 30 for the first year, Rs 30 for the second year and Rs. 40 for the third year in order to give support for the growth of plants and trees.

The state government had kept the interest of the people in mind while submitting ists recommendations of the K Kasturirangan report on Convervation of the Western Ghats to the Centre. The State government in favour of people and not in favour of the Project Tiger coming up in the Kudremukh National Park. Now Centre government has to decide.

The people must remember that the Forest department would provide gas connections and stoves to more than 3500 people in Udupi district along. Therefore the people can give up the using firewood for cooking purposes.

In his presiding over address, Pramod Madhwaraj said that all departments of the state have been directly connected with the people. But the forest department not dealing with the people that is very difficult. This year Udupi faced severe drought situation. The main source of water to Udupi city from Baje Dam completely dried in 29th April, but the rain has arrived to the city on 10th January. Even borewells were not yielding water. There is need to preserve water any way to overcome the scarcity due to less rainfall. There were wars held between states, countries and so on. Water is main source for everyone, he said.

Meenakshi Bannanje, President of Udupi CMC, Nalini P Rao President of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Lata member – secretary of District Legal Services Authority, Priyanka Mary Francis Deputy Commissioner, G Anuradha Additional Deputy Commissioner, G.K. Prabhu of Manipal University, M. Raviraj Narayan, Prof S Balakrishna Muddodi, Punati Sridher IAS, Dr. Sanjay S Bijoor, IAS and other forest officials were present on the occasion.
