Print Manipal : The youth to take up the responsibility and be the catalysts for change in all walks of life to take the country forward, so that how the rural folk could be partners in finding solutions to a lot many problems, Magsaysay award winner Dr. Harish Hande, Managing Director, SELCO.
He was addressing in two day national conference on Youth in Social Change at Dr. TMA Pai Hall here in Manipal on Saturday, 5th August, 2017 which organized by Volunteer Services Organization of Manipal University, Dr Harish Hande said that the focus being on youth and their role in social change, he said that first a change within us was of paramount importance, prior setting out to change others.
He said that he went on to say that his education at IIT was subsidized because the government paid for it. And where did the government get that money where from the poor and tax payers. What are we doing for the poor in return, he asked.
In regard to from his experience he ask another question that If I have PhD in farming do I qualify to be an expert on the subject, or is the one who spent 40 years farming better qualified to talk on the subject. Obviously where are we lack. The poor happen to be experts in various fields and learn from them. We can try to engage their ideas, he said.
Dr. H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University in his presiding address spoke about how being educated is different from being literate and he urged everybody in the room to be educated while being literate.
The two day conference is being organized in its first edition has attracted 600 students from different institutions of the state and other states also.
