Students of Milagres College visit Regional Resources Center for Folk Arts at Udupi

Udupi : The final year B.A students of Milagres College Kallianpur visited Regional Resources Center for Folk Arts and Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Research Center, Manipal University, MGM Campus, Udupi. The field visit was held under the auspices of Humanities Association of Milagres College, Kallianpur. The field visit was organized as part of curriculum on Research Medthodology. The students were accompanied by Prof. Melwin C Rego, Dean of Humanities Associaion and H.O.D of Sociology and Prof. Mrs. Annamma, H.O.D of Economics. The ojective of the field visit was to expose students on the research facilities available in the Center and to be familiar with folk art of Coastal Karnataka.

















Prof. Varadesh Heregange from Manipal University who is the current Co-Ordinator of Research Center addressed the students on the research facilities available at the institute. He also informed about the various activities of the research center in preserving and documenting folk art and culture of Coastal Karnataka.

Dr Ashok Alva, Associate  Co-Ordinator of the Regional Resources Center briefed the students on the life history of Rashtra Kavi Manjeshwara Govinda Pai and his literary contributions to the rich heritage of coastal Karnataka. He also informed about the collection of literature in 36 world and Indian languages  collected and owned by Rashtra Kavi Govinda Pai. Referring to the research activities of of the institute, he informed  with a list of Ph.D holders, 36 scholars have obtained their Ph.D from the Institute through Mysore, Mangalore and Hampi Kannada Universities. Dr Ashok Alva, further showed the collection of over 2000 (two thousand) audio-visual documents in form of audio, video and compact disks preserved for the past 45 years in the Siri Sampada Archives of the  institute which contain recorded folk songs, arts and regional rituals and culture. Dr Alva gave a brief history of the Siri cult being performed in coastal Karnataka.

Prof Melwin C Rego, H.O.D of Sociology briefed the students on the use of various archives and documentary sources available at the institute for  research.

The programme also included the viewing 2 hours  of four video documentaries on Siri ritual, Bhuta Worship-its preparations and rituals, Kambla-a local bufallow sport of rural coast and 16 types of ykshagana role performed by Bannada Malinga 85 year old a renowned  yakshagana artist of Kasargod.


The students also visited the museum and stone plate inscriptions and sculptures preserved in the institute. The field visit was a very enriching one for the students and they have appreciated it a lot. The field visit concluded with a luncheon at The Ocean Pearl, Kunjibettu, Udupi.
