WATERJET FAST ATTACK CRAFT ‘INS TARASA’ COMMISSION AT HQWNC MUMBAI: 26 Sept 17

Mumbai, Sep 2017: Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC), ‘INS TARASA’ built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd, Kolkata was commissioned by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command at Mumbai today, 26 Sep 2017.  Rear Admiral VK Saxena, IN(Retd), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE and other senior officials of the Indian Navy were present during the ceremony.

INS Tarasa is the last warship of the four ‘Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts’ (FO WJFAC), built by GRSE Kolkata. The first three ships of the Follow-on Series of WJFACs INS Tarmugli, INS Tihayu & INS Tillanchang were commissioned into Indian Navy during 2016 -17. GRSE is the pioneer shipyard in the country in construction of Fast Attack Crafts & the shipyard has already delivered 22 ships of this class to the Indian Navy (including those in service with our neighbours in island of Maldives and Seychelles too).

These ships are a further improved version of Fast Attack Crafts earlier built by GRSE for Indian Navy. The ship has an efficient hull form developed by the in-house Design Centre of GRSE and proved by extensive model testing, to achieve speeds in excess of 35 knots. The warship measuring 48 X 7.5 M with a displacement of around 315 Tons, has excellent manoeuvrability and modern accommodation for the crew.
 
Named after an island in the Andaman, INS Tarsa is fitted with three Water Jet Propulsion Systems powered by three Marine Diesel Engines each developing 2720 KW. These ships are also fitted with a CRN-91 indigenous 30 MM gun with an Optronics pedestal sight, to provide artillery fire support for coastal operations.

INS Tarasa also has the honour of being the first indigenously built warship to have successfully completed her Weapon trials prior delivery to the Indian Navy. Normally this activity is undertaken after the ship is delivered to the Navy. The ship will be based at Mumbai under the operational control of the NOIC, Maharashtra.
With the Commissioning of ‘INS Tarasa’, GRSE has once again demonstrated it’s commitment to strengthen the maritime security of the Nation, thereby meeting the aspirations that the country has reposed on this Mini Ratna Shipyard.
